Position Summary :
MDB Transportation is seeking a Driver Operations Manager to oversee driver communication, driver performance, and daily operational execution for our local and drayage operations. This person will serve as the main point of contact for drivers while also supporting dispatch, freight coordination, customer communication, and track and trace. The primary focus of this role is making sure drivers are informed, productive, accountable, and properly supported throughout the day. The Driver Operations Manager will work closely with dispatchers, customers, drivers, and leadership to keep freight moving on time and ensure daily operations are organized and efficient.
Requirements and Responsibilities:
Driver Management:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for MDB Transportation drivers.
  • Communicate daily with drivers regarding schedules, assignments, delays, issues, and expectations.
  • Monitor driver attendance, availability, performance, communication, and service reliability.
  • Help manage driver accountability, productivity, and overall service quality.
  • Follow up with drivers on missed updates, late arrivals, incomplete paperwork, and operational issues.
  • Escalate repeated driver issues, safety concerns, attendance problems, or service failures to leadership.
  • Help create a professional and accountable driver culture.
  • Support driver retention by addressing concerns quickly and professionally.
Dispatch and Operations Support:
  • Assist with dispatching drivers on local, drayage, and regional freight.
  • Support day and night shift dispatch coverage as needed.
  • Help assign loads based on driver availability, equipment availability, hours of service, appointment times, and customer requirements.
  • Coordinate pickups, deliveries, port appointments, yard moves, empty returns, and customer-specific instructions.
  • Help resolve operational issues, including delays, breakdowns, appointment conflicts, equipment issues, and coverage gaps.
  • Work with dispatchers to ensure drivers receive clear and consistent instructions.
Customer Communication:
  • Communicate with customers regarding load status, delays, appointment updates, and service issues when needed.
  • Provide accurate and timely updates on active freight.
  • Help manage customer expectations when operational issues arise.
  • Support leadership and dispatch with customer follow-up, issue resolution, and service performance.
Track and Trace:
  • Monitor active loads from pickup through delivery.
  • Confirm driver status updates, including arrival, loading, unloading, delivery, empty return, and completion.
  • Keep systems updated with accurate load and driver status information.
  • Identify potential service issues early and communicate them internally.
  • Help ensure customers receive timely and accurate updates.
Freight Coordination:
  • Assist with booking and managing freight as needed.
  • Help review available driver capacity and match freight to available trucks.
  • Support daily load planning and schedule execution.
  • Work with leadership to improve driver utilization, truck productivity, revenue per driver, and daily operational performance.
Paperwork and Compliance Support:
  • Follow up with drivers on PODs, BOLs, gate receipts, photos, and other required paperwork.
  • Help ensure paperwork is submitted accurately and on time.
  • Support internal processes related to driver documentation, load completion, and customer requirements.
  • Escalate missing or incomplete paperwork when necessary.
Team Coordination:
  • Work closely with day and night shift dispatchers.
  • Help keep communication organized between drivers, dispatchers, customers, and leadership.
  • Support dispatcher training, process consistency, and issue escalation.
  • Help reduce missed communication, duplicate instructions, and operational confusion.

Competencies/Qualifications:
  • 5 + years of experience in trucking, dispatch, driver management, drayage, local delivery, or transportation operations required.
  • Experience working directly with drivers required.
  • Drayage, port, local, or regional trucking experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of driver communication, load execution, customer updates, and daily trucking operations.
  • Ability to manage multiple drivers, loads, appointments, and issues at the same time.
  • Strong communication skills with drivers, customers, dispatchers, and leadership.
  • Ability to manage driver issues professionally and directly.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with TMS systems, GPS tracking, ELD platforms, Samsara, Alvys, or similar systems preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Pay:
  • The pay depends on experience ($75K - $90K/annually) and will be discussed during an in-person interview.
