The general role of the Fiber Sensing Installation Technician - Fiber Optics is to serve as an on-site resource to oversee the proper installation of fiber optic cable for a variety of purposes such as pipeline monitoring. The Fiber Sensing Installation Technician is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be on active construction sites.
This individual has a strong knowledge of fiber optic installation with a basic understanding of excavation standards and practices and must become proficient with the products and services offered by Pillar Innovations. This position will require a flexible schedule to include extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel with overnight stays as needed.
The Fiber Sensing Installation Technician will report to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily in the Carlsbad, NM and Odessa, TX area.
What You'll Do
  • Provide communication and oversight to contractors and customer personnel to ensure fiber deployment is to spec, undamaged, and in good working condition
  • Periodically conduct oversight OTDR testing to ensure fiber reels and cable remain in operational condition during deployment
  • Develop and manage a detailed project schedule and work plan
  • Provide project updates on a consistent basis regarding strategy, adjustments, and progress
  • Troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues to include OTDR testing, reporting, and troubleshooting
  • Suggest and execute corrective actions to address problems affecting any fiber or fiber related equipment
  • Collaborate with customer and management to develop a strategic deployment plan that streamlines installation and minimizes excess cable waste
  • Perform full acceptance testing on fiber reels to ensure fiber is undamaged and in proper working condition upon delivery from manufacturer
  • Assist in geolocating key reference points and provide distances between points along fiber pathway
  • Install and pull underground conduit and cable without disrupting utilities
  • Install handholes, pedestals, and marker posts
  • Assist with marking underground proposed design routes with respect to utilities and underground systems
  • Facilitate communications between the customer and company
  • Consult with and gather information from technicians, engineers, contractors, etc. to ensure an effective flow of information
  • Maintain positive vendor and client relationships
  • Ensure industry best practices, techniques, and standards throughout entire project execution
  • Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set)
  • Recognize general safety hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardware
  • Manage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections
  • Stay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber optics
  • Proficiently work with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.
  • Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables
  • Install demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipment
  • Calibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturer's instructions
  • Read and interpret design packages
  • Complete documentation to include T&M, record-keeping, billing, inventory, COB (close of business) reports etc.
  • Generate trace reports and SEP (splice engineering package) files

What You'll Bring
  • 2-4 years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of excavation standards and equipment required
  • Abilit to multi-task and manage multiple projects effectively
  • Adaptable and calm under pressure
  • Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes
  • Valid Driver's License is required
  • Experience with the following equipment: ladders, cable puller, and reel stands preferred
  • Small equipment experience preferred (i.e. forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)
  • Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision
  • Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck
  • Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism
  • Compute basic math calculations and take measurements
  • Ability to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams
  • Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio
