Reports to: Broadband Services Supervisor
Fiber Optic Field Technicians are responsible for fiber installations, maintenance, and associated equipment. This position also works with customers to demonstrate equipment use, troubleshoot and support technical issues affecting service, and explain service features.
Essential Duties
โ€ข Perform fiber optic residential and commercial aerial and underground construction, installations, disconnects, downgrades, and upgrades at customer premises, including fiber mechanical/fusion splicing.
โ€ข Test and repair fiber optic network lines as part of preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
โ€ข Install inside wiring, optical splitters, wireless access points, and routers inside the home, optimizing placement for the best customer experience.
โ€ข Participate in established stand by schedule and may be called to assist other when problems develop due to emergency situations.
โ€ข Update digital documentation in databases and other programs.
โ€ข Work closely with Network Engineers, electric utility personnel, Customer Service Representatives, and residential/business customers.
โ€ข Maintain knowledge of current installation technical principles and industry standards.
โ€ข Adhere to all MIOSHA safety regulations and company safety policies.
โ€ข Perform all other tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
โ€ข High School diploma or GED.
โ€ข Experience working as a fiber optic installation technician.
โ€ข Experience working with aerial and underground equipment.
โ€ข Problem solver with technical aptitude and general computer software application skills.
โ€ข Communication skills, professionalism, time management, organization, critical thinking, responsibility/reliability, and customer service aptitude.
โ€ข Experience working with hand tools and ability to interpret results from electronic tools.
โ€ข Residency within 20 miles of municipal boundary.
โ€ข Valid Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record within company standards.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข Networking and/or cable installation technical certification, such as CCENT, CompTIA A+, CNCI, BISCI, or similar.
โ€ข Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents - 5, Graphic Literacy - 4, Workplace Observation - 3)
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
โ€ข Proximity to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical, and/or power equipment.
โ€ข Outside working conditions with frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
โ€ข Exposure to heights while working on poles, ladders, and out of utility bucket trucks.
