A Day in the Life as a Fiber & Wireless Field Service Technician

A Fiber & Wireless Field Service Technician at IdeaTek is a hardworking individual dedicated to connecting our communities through reliable internet and VoIP services. Each day, you will support business operations by performing independent installations, fiber optic cable splicing, and prompt repairs in outdoor environments.


This role requires a passion for problem-solving. Your daily responsibilities include performing pre-install inspections, climbing towers, managing underground fiber drops, and operating bucket trucks for aerial work and plant construction. Working both independently and as part of a team, you will combine hands-on technical problem-solving with a strong commitment to safety, following all company, OSHA, and industry standards as you install, align, troubleshoot, and repair equipment.

The individual in this role will support services and work in the field in and around Parsons, KS.


What You'll Do
Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform fiber optic cable splicing, repairs, and plant construction/decommissioning in outdoor environments. Deliver and maintain wireless services, including aligning internet dishes and wireless receivers.
  • Complete pre-install inspections, installation, testing, and maintenance on wireless towers, including climbing to install and repair equipment for new and existing builds.
  • Handle service repairs independently and service drops from terminals to ensure reliable fiber delivery to businesses.
  • Service and repair VoIP systems for both residential and business customers to ensure high-quality communication.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve customer connection and connectivity issues accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of splicing schematics and spreadsheets, recording accurate splicing and field notes to support service timelines.
  • Provide an exceptional experience to customers by being friendly, patient, and efficient.
  • Ensure all work meets quality standards, safety protocols, and customer satisfaction goals while working at various heights (roofs, poles, towers, ladders, or bucket trucks).

What We're Looking For
To be considered for this role, you'll need the following required qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in a field-based technical role (splicing, installation, electrician, HVAC, or other low voltage work)
  • Tower climbing experience or willingness to learn.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no restrictions with the ability to complete a DOT physical.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Has the ability to differentiate colors
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Able to enter and safely operate a bucket truck with a weight limit of 300 lbs.
  • Ability to work both underground and in aerial environments (i.e., climbing ladders and/or operating a bucket truck).
