What is a festival first aid?

Festival First Aid workers are trained individuals who provide medical assistance and emergency care at festivals and large public events. Their responsibilities include treating minor injuries, managing medical emergencies, and ensuring the overall health and safety of attendees. They are often the first responders to incidents such as dehydration, injuries, or illnesses, and work closely with event organizers and emergency services. Festival First Aid workers may be volunteers or professionals with certifications in first aid and CPR. Their presence helps ensure that festivalgoers have access to prompt and effective medical care if needed.

What are some common challenges faced by festival first aid staff during major events?

Festival First Aid staff often encounter challenges such as managing large crowds, responding quickly to a variety of medical incidents, and working in outdoor environments with unpredictable weather. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you'll often coordinate with event organizers, security, and emergency services. Adapting to fast-paced situations and maintaining composure under pressure are key to ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a festival first aid professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Festival First Aid professional, you need a solid understanding of first aid practices, emergency response, and often a certification such as First Aid at Work or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Familiarity with medical kits, communication radios, and incident reporting systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, quick decision-making, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure timely and effective care for attendees, prevent escalation of medical incidents, and maintain safety at large public events.

EMTs and Paramedics, Special Events Division Carolina First EMS, Columbia and Elgin, South Carolina Part-time PRN, W2. Multiple openings, immediate start.

Carolina First EMS is standing up a Special Events Division and hiring South Carolina certified EMTs and paramedics for event medical work across the Midlands, beginning with a major multi day event this October.

Pay

  • Paramedic: $30.00 per hour base, plus a $10.00 per hour event differential, so $40.00 per hour on event shifts
  • EMT: $22.00 per hour base, plus a $10.00 per hour event differential, so $32.00 per hour on event shifts
  • Overtime at time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek

October event, Columbia

  • Eleven consecutive days
  • Full day shifts, roughly 12 to 15 hours
  • Most crew members work 3 to 4 shifts across the run, not all 11 days

Beyond October

This is a standing division, not a one-time detail. Members get first call on our year-round event work: festivals, concerts, and other standby coverage across the Midlands.

What you will do

  • Provide patient care and standby coverage at events, in a First Aid station and roaming on foot
  • Work as part of a crew under an on-site Event Medical Supervisor
  • Move patients to First Aid, including by wheelchair
  • Staff a dedicated ALS transport ambulance as assigned
  • Document every patient encounter in our electronic patient care record

What you need

  • Current South Carolina EMT or Paramedic certification in good standing
  • Current CPR certification; paramedics also need ACLS
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods, work outdoors in variable weather, and lift and move patients with assistance

We especially want to hear from you if

  • You have worked large fairground or festival first aid in past years
  • You currently work for a county EMS agency or another service and want event shifts on your days off
  • You have event medicine, festival, race, or stadium experience
