The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco and is governed by a Commission of five members appointed by the Mayor. The Port Commission is responsible for overseeing a broad range of waterfront commercial, maritime, and public access facilities that are held in public trust for the people of California. The Port's jurisdiction covers approximately 7.5 miles of waterfront land from Pier 98, near Hunter's Point in the southern part of San Francisco, to Fisherman's Wharf in the northern part of the City.
The Port's diverse business portfolio includes over 550 ground, commercial, retail, office, industrial and maritime industrial leases including cargo shipping, layberthing, excursion boats, ferry boats, fishing and fish processing/distribution, tourism, filming, harbor services, and cruise operations. Maintenance Division
The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the Port's seven and one half miles of waterfront property and maintaining the waterfront as a positive connection to the other parts of the City.
More than 100 skilled craftspeople are responsible for the preservation and improvement of the Port's fishing harbors, ferry landings, public parks, cargo terminals, piers, promenades and buildings. The overall maintenance performed by the Maintenance Division includes the skilled work of carpenters, electricians, painters, gardeners, iron workers, pile drivers, plumbers, roofers, operating engineers, teamsters, welders, machinists, asphalt workers, sheet-metal workers, stationary engineers and general laborers.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Piledriver Supervisor, the Piledriver Engine Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes that support pile driving operations.This position may work independently or as part of a piledriving crew. As a member of a piledriving crew, performs a variety of duties related to the repair and construction of piers, wharves, and related substructures, and may be required to assist with placing, driving, and capping piles; laying stringers and decking; framing timbers; and the demolition and removal of decayed or damaged structural or non-structural members.
Duties of the Piledriver Engine Operator include:
- Safely operates and maintains barge mounted and mobile land-based cranes that support piledriving operations; drives forklifts and/or Port vehicles, and/or small boats.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of cranes and piledriving equipment.
- Fuels cranes.
- Conducts pre and post operational checks of the entire crane system.
- Participates in the inspection and certification of cranes and auxiliary equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required of Class 9331 Piledriver Engine Operator.
Nature of the Work: May require working under adverse weather conditions, working on weekends and long hours outside regular scheduled shifts.
Experience
Three (3) years certified crane operator experience on barge mounted and mobile land base cranes used for piledriving.
License and Certification
- Possession of valid California Class B commercial driver's license (to be presented at time of employment). Applicants selected for employment must be insurable under the Port's liability insurance. Insurability must be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) certificates including the following designations as required by CalOSHA:
- LBT - Lattice Boom Truck Cranes,
- LBC - Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes
- TSS - Small Telescopic Boom Cranes (less than 17.5 ton)
- TLL - Large Telescopic Boom Cranes (more than 17.5 ton)
Desirable Qualifications (Ideal Candidate)
The stated desirable qualifications listed below may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
Theideal candidatewill have:
- Experience operating cranes in marine construction environments.
- Strong working knowledge of safety protocols and regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency operating and working around heavy pile-driving equipment, including cranes, vibratory and impact hammers, leads, winches, and related marine construction machinery.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs on cranes and auxiliary equipment.
- Demonstrate situational awareness in high-risk work environments, with the ability to follow established safety protocols and chain of command during pile driving and marine construction operations.
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the Port's Maritime Transportation System (MTS). An application for a TWIC card may be submitted after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent undergo a criminal history check, immigration check and terrorist threat assessment, including FBI fingerprints, in order to determine eligibility for security clearance.
The incumbent must submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a TWIC card. Per Civil Service Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain a TWIC card, a requirement for this position, may be the basis for termination from employment with the Port Commission.
Note: TWIC requirements and procedures are located in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, 49 U.S.C. 114, 40113, and 49 U.S.C. 5103a.

Oral/Performance Examination: (Weight 100%)
Qualified candidates will be tested to determine their relative knowledge, ability and skill levels in job-related areas, which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of the operation, maintenance and servicing requirements of barge mounted and mobile land based cranes, rules and regulations regarding the safe operation and maintenance of cranes, safety equipment used in the operation of cranes and pile working methods and operation, ability and skill to operate cranes on land and water, operate forklifts and small boats, drive Port vehicles, follow oral and written instructions and keep routine records of equipment operations and inspections.
A passing score on the Oral/Performance Examination must be achievedin order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List.Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Date of Examination
The in-person examinations are only held in San Francisco. Those candidates meeting the Minimum Qualifications will be notified of the exact date, time and location to report to the examination.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will betwelve (12) monthsand may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
Certification Rule:
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will beRule of Three (3) Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
