What is a FEMA LPN?

A FEMA LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) job involves providing medical care and support during disaster response efforts. LPNs in this role assist with triage, administering medications, monitoring patients, and supporting medical teams in emergency shelters or disaster-affected areas. They work under the direction of registered nurses and physicians to help communities in crisis. These positions are typically temporary and require flexibility, as deployments can occur with short notice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FEMA LPN?

To thrive as a FEMA LPN, you need a valid LPN license, strong clinical nursing skills, and a solid understanding of emergency response protocols. Familiarity with disaster response systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and basic medical equipment is important. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and stress management are key soft skills for working in unpredictable environments with diverse teams. These skills ensure effective patient care and seamless operations during high-pressure disaster response situations.

What are the unique challenges of working as an LPN during FEMA disaster deployments?

As an LPN working with FEMA, you may encounter challenging conditions such as extended hours, rapidly changing environments, and limited medical resources. You'll need to be prepared to care for patients from diverse backgrounds, often in makeshift or temporary facilities following natural or human-made disasters. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, flexibility, and strong communication skills are essential in this dynamic setting. Despite these challenges, the role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact in communities during their time of greatest need.

Does working for FEMA pay well?

FEMA LPNs typically earn a salary comparable to other federal healthcare roles, with pay rates often based on GS (General Schedule) levels, which can range from GS-3 to GS-9 depending on experience and responsibilities. Overtime, hazard pay, and deployment allowances can increase overall compensation, especially during emergency responses. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave, making it a competitive option for healthcare professionals in emergency management.

What qualifications do you need to work for FEMA?

To work as an LPN for FEMA, candidates typically need a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license, relevant healthcare experience, and the ability to work in emergency or disaster response environments. Additional certifications such as CPR and first aid may be required, along with the ability to pass background checks and meet physical requirements.

Employer Essential HealthCare Solutions, LLC

Job Type: PRN / Temporary — Storm Activation

Shifts: 12-hour shifts, days/nights; up to 24/7 coverage; up to 14 days

About the Role

Essential HealthCare Solutions, LLC is building a roster of Florida-licensed Practical Nurses to support on-site medical care at employee shelters during hurricane and severe-weather events in Southwest Florida. Working under the direction of a Registered Nurse, our LPNs deliver hands-on basic nursing care to the crews and emergency personnel working to keep the power on.

This is on-call, activation-based work ideal for nurses who want meaningful disaster-response experience and flexible, well-compensated deployments.

Deployment Locations & Environment

Deployable to any of the three LCEC-designated shelter sites in North Fort Myers (Lee County), and to other facilities identified in writing by the Cooperative during an activation:

  • 4980 Bayline Drive, North Fort Myers, FL 33917
  • 141 East Mariana Avenue, North Fort Myers, FL 33917
  • LCEC Basecamp, Williams Road, North Fort Myers, FL 33917

Shelter occupants may include Cooperative employees, line crews, vegetation-management contractors, mutual-aid personnel, emergency-operations staff, and authorized support personnel — populations of 50 to 500+ operating continuously for 24 hours to 14 days.

    What You'll Do

  • Provide basic nursing care to shelter occupants under the direction of a Registered Nurse
  • Administer treatments and medications within the LPN scope of practice as directed
  • Deliver first aid, monitor vital signs, and manage minor illnesses and injuries
  • Collect clinical data and assist the RN with screenings, monitoring, and referrals to urgent care, hospital, or EMS
  • Respond to on-site medical incidents and provide nursing care within scope, supporting the RN until EMS assumes care
  • Monitor for heat illness, dehydration, fatigue, infectious-disease concerns, and signs of stress
  • Implement infection-prevention practices and recommend isolation or mitigation measures when appropriate
  • Assist with setup of the shelter medical station and maintain medical-supply inventory
  • Maintain accurate documentation, incident notes, and supply/usage records
  • Escalate serious incidents promptly to the RN and management

    What You'll Bring

  • Active, unencumbered Florida LPN license — required
  • Current BLS certification — required
  • Ability to pass a background screening
  • Availability to deploy on short notice and work extended 12-hour shifts in shelter/field conditions
  • Comfort working as part of an RN-led team in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment
  • Preferred: emergency, long-term care, shelter, or disaster-response experience; IV/medication administration per FL scope; ICS/FEMA training

    Schedule & Conditions

This is activation-based work. Deployments are triggered by storm events — from up to 72 hours before anticipated landfall, through impact, and into recovery — for periods of 24 hours to 14 consecutive days. You will work 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, in shelter and temporary-facility settings. Meals and lodging are provided during qualifying deployments, and PPE is supplied.

Upon activation, you acknowledge the assignment within one (1) hour and confirm availability, roster placement, estimated deployment time, and emergency-contact information.
