What is FedEx staffing?

FedEx staffing refers to the process of recruiting, hiring, and managing employees for various positions within FedEx, one of the world’s largest courier delivery services companies. This includes roles such as package handlers, delivery drivers, warehouse workers, and administrative staff. Staffing can be managed internally by FedEx HR or through third-party staffing agencies, depending on the specific needs and locations. The goal is to ensure that FedEx has enough qualified personnel to meet operational demands, especially during peak shipping seasons.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in FedEx staffing roles, and why are they important?

To thrive in a FedEx staffing role, you generally need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in recruitment or human resources, often supported by a relevant degree or HR certification. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), HR software, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and a customer-oriented mindset help you stand out in this position. These skills ensure efficient talent acquisition, effective team collaboration, and the ability to meet the fast-paced staffing needs of FedEx operations.

What are some common challenges faced by FedEx staffing team members, and how can they effectively address them?

FedEx staffing team members often face challenges such as high-volume recruitment during peak seasons, meeting tight deadlines, and matching candidates to the right roles efficiently. To address these, team members can leverage advanced applicant tracking systems, maintain strong communication with hiring managers, and develop talent pipelines in advance. Staying adaptable and fostering teamwork are also key to ensuring staffing needs are met while maintaining a positive candidate experience.

Job description

Job Description: Driver Coordinator / Fleet Dispatcher (FedEx Ground Contracted Operation)

Department: Operations / Contracted Service Providers Reports To: Contracted Service Provider (CSP) Owner / General Manager Employment Type: Contracted Business Employee (via ISP/CSP business, not direct FedEx employment) Shift: Primarily Evenings and Nights Location: [Insert Terminal/Station Location]

Position Summary

The Driver Coordinator oversees a team of contracted delivery drivers during evening and night operations, ensuring routes are staffed, dispatched, and completed on time. This role acts as the point person between drivers and management — tracking performance, troubleshooting delays, and stepping in on basic vehicle issues when needed. Because this person will be relied on for both people-coordination and light mechanical judgment, prior hands-on experience driving for FedEx and a working knowledge of diesel vehicles are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Driver Coordination

  • Coordinate the nightly/evening driver schedule, confirming all routes are covered and drivers report on time
  • Track drivers throughout their shift and proactively address delays, no-shows, or route issues
  • Communicate with drivers to keep deliveries/pickups on schedule and resolve problems in real time
  • Reassign stops or routes as needed to cover call-outs or breakdowns
  • Maintain accurate records of driver attendance, on-time performance, and incidents
  • Serve as the first point of contact for driver questions or issues during the shift
  • Report performance trends and recurring issues to the CSP owner/management

Vehicle & Equipment Support

  • Perform basic diagnostic checks on trucks (diesel engines) when a driver reports a mechanical issue
  • Determine whether a vehicle is safe to run its route or needs to be pulled for repair
  • Coordinate with a mechanic or repair shop for issues beyond basic troubleshooting
  • Help keep the fleet's maintenance and inspection records up to date

General

  • Uphold FedEx safety, appearance, and service standards across the team
  • Support onboarding of new drivers with route and process knowledge
  • Be available to fill in on a route personally if needed to keep operations on schedule

Qualifications

Required:

  • Previous experience working as a FedEx driver (Ground, Express, or similar contracted delivery role)
  • Some hands-on diesel mechanic background — comfortable with basic engine troubleshooting and diagnosing common issues
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work evening and night shifts, including weekends as needed
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; comfortable managing multiple drivers/routes at once
  • Ability to stay calm and solve problems under time pressure

Preferred:

  • Experience coordinating, dispatching, or supervising a driver team
  • Familiarity with handheld scanning/route management systems
  • Additional mechanical or fleet maintenance experience

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Shift is primarily evenings and nights, with hours varying based on route completion and volume
  • Work involves time in an office/dispatch area as well as time on the dock and around vehicles
  • May require occasional driving to cover routes or check on vehicles in the field

Compensation & Structure

Compensation is determined by the contracting ISP/CSP business and may be structured as an hourly wage or salary depending on the business agreement. This is not a direct FedEx employee position; the Driver Coordinator is an employee of the contracted ISP/CSP business operating under FedEx Ground's Independent Service Provider agreement.

Company Description

We are contractor to FedEx Ground.
None of runs are out of state or over the road.
Drivers are not responsible for loading trailers. Drivers only drop and hook.
