Job description

Job Description
Why AeroShield might be great for you
AeroShield is a collaborative team of 25+ people bound by a mission to deliver innovative new materials to make our lives more sustainable. A lot of energy is wasted by poor building insulation, especially poorly insulated windows and we want to change that. We are developing super-insulating, transparent inserts for windows based on aerogels, bringing state-of-the-art thermal comfort and energy efficiency into buildings at an affordable price.
You'll become part of a growing team where everyone is familiar, collaborating closely to tackle impactful challenges. In this environment, you'll be surrounded by talented individuals who excel in their roles and are supportive team players.
Our goal is to ensure that our super-insulating silica aerogel, the first truly transparent aerogel, is widely adopted to enable affordable, high-performance windows.
What we are looking for in a Product Development Technician
We're in search of someone who enjoys the autonomy offered by a dynamic small startup environment and takes initiative to find new learning opportunities. This person should be highly organized and detail oriented, have a passion for learning new skills and processes, and be able to work collaboratively with others.
We highly value a positive team culture and are looking for someone who wants to be part of continuously enhancing this culture - ideally playing an active role in this as the company grows. This person should embody AeroShield's values of Understand & Improve, Value People and Persons, and Act Sustainably.
The Product Development Technician will assist the product development team in the fabrication, assembly, and inspection of aerogel-integrated products and their machinery as well as maintaining and documenting production processes.
As the ideal candidate you have experience working in a hands-on setting and have an unwavering commitment to safety. You thrive in fast-paced environments where the results of your work play an important role in advancing new technologies to market.
  • Manufacturing & Operations: Perform manufacturing activities, including assembling novel aerogel-integrated Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) and operating pilot manufacturing equipment.
  • Quality & Yield Tracking: Track production yield and identify where issues or defects originate, documenting results using AeroShield standard practices and collaborating with the team to implement solutions.
  • Shipping, Receiving & Inspection: Manage shipping and receiving operations, which includes preparing IGU shipments, weighing/measuring packages, booking pick-ups (e.g., FedEx), and performing rigorous inspections of all incoming materials and outgoing goods.
  • Engineering Collaboration: Partner with the engineering team to build, assemble, and test novel in-house designed machines, actively engaging in problem-solving and brainstorming to develop new solutions for technician-adjacent work.
  • Machine Shop Ownership & Maintenance: Take full ownership of the machine shop and inventory management by maintaining cleanliness, organizing production supplies, recommending tool purchases, and performing routine maintenance on lab and pilot plant equipment.

This role requires candidates to be on-site 5 days a week at our facility in Waltham, MA.
Qualifications
Many great team members do not fit a "standard blueprint". Even if you do not fit all aspects listed below, but feel that you can contribute to AeroShield's team, please do not hesitate to apply or to reach out with questions. Great candidates for this role enjoy learning quickly, are excited about new technologies, and possess a technical background through school or work experience.
  • High school diploma required. Associate degree or higher is a plus, ideally in a tech-related field.
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing, assembly, machine shop, lab, or R&D environments.
  • Experience managing shipping, receiving, and packaging operations.
  • Ability to accurately interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering ideas.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, focusing on accuracy and quality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to listen, distill information, consult, and suggest new approaches.
  • Quick learner and creative problem-solver able to learn quickly by leveraging all possible resources.
  • Self-starter who thrives in a dynamic environment and takes full ownership of their workspace.
  • Highly organized and works well in teams.
  • Passionate about AeroShield values.

Bonus skills:
  • Experience working hands-on with machinery such as pumps, compressors, and pressure vessels (training provided).
  • Experience with glass, laminate, or Insulated Glass Unit (IGU)-type materials.
  • Familiarity with data collection, data entry and data reporting, particularly in software like Microsoft Excel and ClickUp.
  • Able to perform wet-lab chemical experiments, including working in fume hoods.
