Both Federal Marshals and U.S. Marshals are federal law enforcement officers working under the Department of Justice. They share similar credentials, work environments, and employer agencies. The main difference lies in terminology and specific duties, with 'U.S. Marshal' being the more commonly used title for federal law enforcement officers responsible for apprehending fugitives, protecting federal witnesses, and managing federal prisoners.
A federal marshal works for the United States government as part of the U.S. Marshals Service law enforcement agency. In this career, you capture, arrest, and transport criminals and fugitives charged with federal crimes and offer security to fugitive family members, witnesses, and victims of their crimes. Your responsibilities include collaborating with law enforcement officials all over the world to find and capture the fugitive, participating in investigations, taking witness statements, and transporting fugitives to the proper location for detainment. Federal marshals who are part of the judicial security branch have duties that focus on providing security for judges, attorneys, and other personnel involved in federal trials.
