What are federal cybersecurity jobs?
Federal cyber security jobs involve providing cyber security services for the United States government or a government agency. Your responsibilities vary depending on the area in which you work. As a federal cyber security analyst, you assess current security systems, define risk levels and threats, and suggest improvements to cyber security systems. A cyber security consultant offers assessments and suggestions about how to counteract cyber crime and how to respond to a data breach or system hack. A federal cyber security program manager creates strategies and systems to protect government sites and data assets and implements these programs.

Job description
Thank you for your interest in Truckee Meadows Community College. If you need assistance or have questions regarding the application process, please contact Human Resources at (775) 673-7168 orย humanresources@tmcc.edu.
Job Description
Truckee Meadows Community College, located in Reno, NV is seeking applicants for a part-time Cyber Range Coordinator.
TMCC's Cybersecurity Program - offered as both an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and a Skills Certificate within Computer Science and Technology - has been established for more than eight years and serves approximately 60-80 students annually across two career pathways: network defense and application security. A hallmark of the program is TMCC's Cyber Range, a secure, isolated computing environment that simulates real-world networks, systems, and user activity so students and industry partners can safely practice penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, network defense, and incident response without risk to live systems.
The Cyber Range Coordinator & Cyber Exercise Developer manages the day-to-day operation, security, and continuous improvement of this range and leads the design, development, and facilitation of realistic cybersecurity exercises and tabletop simulations for a reusable exercise repository. Beyond student instruction, the position drives the range's role as a community resource: facilitating collaborative tabletop exercises with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public agencies so those partners can test preparedness, response protocols, and communication strategies during simulated incidents - while giving students direct exposure to real-world professional scenarios.
This role benchmarks TMCC's cyber range curricula and exercise design against national standards - including the NIST NICE Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity, CISA's Tabletop Exercise Package (CTEP) resources, and practices used at peer community-college and federal/DoD cyber ranges (e.g., the Persistent Cyber Training Environment model) - so that TMCC graduates and regional partners are trained to recognized, transferable standards rather than ad hoc criteria. Working closely with Cybersecurity faculty, IT staff, NSHE system partners, and regional industry/government stakeholders, the Coordinator ensures the range remains operational, secure, aligned to FERPA and NSHE data-governance requirements, and current with evolving cybersecurity threats and workforce needs.
Responsibilities:
Cyber Range Administration
Administer, maintain, and continuously enhance TMCC's cyber range infrastructure, including virtualized environments, networking, servers, storage, identity/access controls, and security tooling.
Configure, deploy, and maintain isolated cyber range environments supporting credit instruction, non-credit workforce training, competitions, and outreach events.
Troubleshoot hardware, software, networking, virtualization, and access issues, escalating to TMCC IT or vendor support as needed.
Develop and maintain a library of repeatable, versioned lab environments and scenario templates that can be reused across course sections and training cohorts.
Monitor system performance, availability, and security posture of the range, applying patching and hardening practices consistent with TMCC/NSHE IT security standards.
Maintain current documentation of range architecture, configurations, standard operating procedures, and access/role assignments (e.g., in TMCC's enterprise architecture repository).
Exercise Development
Design, build, and facilitate realistic cybersecurity tabletop exercises, technical simulations, and live cyber range events for students, faculty, and external partners.
Plan and facilitate collaborative tabletop exercises with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public agencies, allowing those partners to test preparedness, incident response protocols, and communication strategies in a simulated environment.
Align exercise objectives and skill outcomes to recognized frameworks such as the NIST NICE Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity and CISA's Tabletop Exercise Package, ensuring benchmarked, curriculum-relevant learning outcomes.
Develop after-action review materials, scoring rubrics, and participant performance evaluations; recommend improvements to scenarios, range configuration, and instructional sequencing.
Maintain a growing, categorized repository of exercises, injects, and scenario documentation for reuse across semesters, pathways, and community partner engagements.
Academic and Workforce Support
Collaborate with Cybersecurity program faculty to integrate cyber range activities, labs, and exercises into AAS and Skills Certificate coursework (e.g., Introduction to Cybersecurity, Ethical Hacking, Digital Forensics, Cyber Threat Intelligence) and program learning outcomes.
Support laboratory instruction, capstone projects, and student competition teams (e.g., CTF and cyber defense competitions) across both the network defense and application security pathways.
Assist with cybersecurity outreach events, K-12 and workforce pipeline activities, and employer-facing demonstrations.
Coordinate open lab sessions, student access schedules, and range usage policies in support of both curricular and extracurricular activity, as well as scheduled community-partner exercises.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field;
Three (3) years of experience in cybersecurity, systems/network administration, or IT infrastructure support, including work with virtualized or simulated network environments.
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field;
One (1) years of experience in cybersecurity, systems/network administration, or IT infrastructure support, including work with virtualized or simulated network environments.
An equivalent combination of education, industry certification, and directly relevant professional experience.
Demonstrated experience configuring, operating, or troubleshooting lab, range, or simulated environments (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or cloud-based lab platforms).
Ability to design and deliver scenario-based training or exercises to technical and non-technical audiences.
Ability to pass a background check consistent with NSHE/TMCC employment requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience administering a dedicated cyber range or cyber training platform
Experience designing or facilitating tabletop exercises or live-fire cyber exercises aligned to CISA's Tabletop Exercise Package (CTEP), the NIST NICE Workforce Framework, or similar recognized methodologies.
Relevant industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+/CySA+/PenTest+, GIAC (GCIH, GCFA, GPEN), or (ISC) CC/SSCP/CISSP.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, modern cyber threats, and the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) commonly used in adversary emulation.
Working knowledge of virtualization, networking, scripting/automation, and systems administration sufficient to build and maintain isolated training environments.
