Job description

Overview
The Histology Technician, Uncertified, processes tissue specimens, prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination, maintains equipment, and ensures Agency-compliant documentation and inventory management.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Accession tissue specimens.
  2. Receive and prepare tissue specimens.
  3. May perform grossing and inking (dependent on meeting CLIA requirements).
  4. Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
  5. Process tissue, embedding, microtomy/cutting, staining, use cryostat, freezing.
  6. Label and prepare slides.
  7. Examine slides under the microscope to detect deviations from the norm and report abnormalities.
  8. With oversight, identify problems that may affect diagnosis and results.
  9. Preserve and store samples.
  10. Clean and maintain instruments, equipment, and work areas.
  11. Log, file, track, and store specimens and slides.
  12. Maintain lab supplies inventory.
  13. Maintain documentation in all Agency-required and clinic or lab-preferred QA/QC logs.
  14. Adhere to compliance and completion of compliance training.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  1. CLIA requirements to perform specified job duties, preferred:
    • A minimum of 60 semester hours with: 24 hours in medical lab technology OR 24 hours with (6-chemistry, 6-biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology, medical technology in any combination AND three months documented lab training in high complexity testing by specialty.
  2. Associate's degree preferred.
  3. Completion of NAACLS histology training program preferred.
  4. Previous experience as a histology technician preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Must be knowledgeable in standard concepts, practices, and procedures, with a strong understanding of anatomy and tissue pathology.
  2. Must be detail oriented.
  3. Must have effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams.
  4. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  5. High level of integrity, ethical judgment, and confidentiality when handling sensitive data.
  6. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. Must be able to learn new software quickly.
  7. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, leadership, and the public.
  8. Ability to use time productively and contribute to high levels of company operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment.
  2. Ability to efficiently operate all job related office equipment (telephone, computer, calculator, fax, copier).
  3. Ability to communicate via telephone.
  4. Ability to sit and/or stand for large portions of a workday.
