What is a cath lab tech?

Cath Lab Techs, or Catheterization Laboratory Technologists, are healthcare professionals who assist doctors during cardiac catheterization procedures and other heart-related tests. They operate specialized imaging equipment to help diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions, monitor patients' vital signs, and ensure a sterile environment. Cath Lab Techs play a crucial role in preparing patients, handling instruments, and providing support before, during, and after procedures. Their expertise helps ensure patient safety and the success of complex cardiovascular interventions.

What are some common challenges cath lab techs face during procedures, and how can they effectively manage them?

Cath Lab Techs often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing patient conditions, complex equipment troubleshooting, and the need to maintain strict sterile environments during high-pressure procedures. Effective communication with physicians and the rest of the team is crucial for anticipating needs and responding quickly to any complications. Staying current with the latest technology and protocols, as well as practicing strong organizational skills, helps Cath Lab Techs navigate these demands and ensure patient safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cath Lab Tech?

To thrive as a Cath Lab Tech, you need a solid understanding of cardiovascular technology, anatomy, and sterile procedures, typically supported by an associate degree in cardiovascular technology or a related field and ARRT or RCIS certification. Familiarity with imaging equipment, hemodynamic monitoring systems, and radiation safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, composure under pressure, and strong communication skills help you excel in high-stress, team-oriented environments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring patient safety, accurate diagnostics, and effective support during complex cardiac procedures.

StartDate: ASAP Available Shifts: 10 D Pay Rate: $3269.00 - $3369.00
This Special Procedures and Cath Lab Technologist role offers a day-shift schedule in a well-established hospital located in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond blends historic charm with a modern, livable city feel, featuring tree-lined neighborhoods, a highly regarded food and craft beer scene, and a thriving arts and music culture. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the James River Park System with its trails, whitewater, and parks right in the city, while day trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia wine country, and Atlantic beaches are all within easy reach. Richmondโ€™s manageable traffic, strong school options, and vibrant but relaxed lifestyle make it an attractive home base for healthcare professionals. The hospitalโ€™s cardiac and vascular program is a key regional resource, with a focus on comprehensive cardiovascular care and interventional services. The cath lab and special procedures areas feature modern imaging systems, hemodynamic monitoring, and a collaborative, procedure-focused environment. The department emphasizes patient safety, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement, offering technologists a setting where their skills are highly valued and frequently utilized. As a Special Procedures and Cath Lab Technologist, you will support a broad range of diagnostic and interventional procedures. Typical cases may include diagnostic coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary interventions, peripheral angiography and interventions, device implantations, and other special procedures performed in the cath or hybrid lab environment. Daily responsibilities often include preparing the room and equipment, setting up and maintaining sterile fields, performing scrub duties, assisting with device selection and preparation, operating imaging and hemodynamic systems, and monitoring and documenting patient status throughout the procedure. You can expect to rotate through key technologist roles, including scrub, circulate, and monitor, depending on case type and staffing. The department fosters a strong team culture between technologists, nurses, physicians, and support staff, with clear communication and structured workflows designed to support complex procedures and urgent cases. Patient volumes and case mix provide opportunities to maintain and expand skills in both routine and advanced interventional techniques. Shifts are primarily daytime, with participation in an on-call rotation for emergent procedures as needed. While patient ratios vary depending on case type and acuity, technologists typically work as part of a focused team dedicated to a specific room or procedural area during a shift. The environment supports professional development through exposure to evolving interventional technologies, cross-training opportunities, and involvement in new procedural offerings as the cardiovascular program grows.
