The University of Tennessee invites applications from all qualifiedindividuals for a full-time faculty appointment as VeterinaryPharmacology Director in the Department of Biomedical andDiagnostic Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunityto blend diagnostic service, discovery, and teaching in the area ofveterinary pharmacology.

The Diagnostic Pharmacology Service (DPS) ( https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/dls/pharmacology/) is involved in numerous pharmacokinetic studies in variousspecies. Applicants must have a strong interest in clinical andcollaborative research with a special interest in analyticalanalysis and drug pharmacokinetics. The service is recognizednationally and internationally for both its quality and expertisein analytical methodology for clinical research. The laboratorydevelops and validates assays intended to support both intramuraland extramural research, thus encouraging interaction between theUT College of Veterinary Medicine, the pharmaceutical industry,other universities, zoos and aquariums. The position advisesresidents, clinical and research faculty in the development ofpharmacokinetic projects in a variety of species, interprets highperformance liquid chromatography results and providespharmacokinetic interpretations and consultations.

The successful candidate will direct a lab that has one labsupervisor, one laboratory technician, and typically, 3undergraduate students.

The faculty member will:

• have oversight of all laboratory operations ensuring day-to-day requirements are met in an accurate and timely fashion
• ensure that the facility and equipment are maintained
• have an understanding of laboratory quality control, and laboratory safety
• develop new techniques to meet evolving needs
• communicate policies, prices, and laboratory changes to our clients
• budget oversight for all laboratory services including revenues and fee structure, expenses, and approval of new expenditures
• supervision, management, and annual evaluation of laboratory staff; and must possess excellentinterpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere

The remaining effort allocation will include teaching activitiesand scientific advancement in proportions that are negotiable basedon candidate interest. Contributions to the teaching mission of theCollege may be through the DVM curriculum, graduate program, and/orcontinuing education symposia. Engagement in scientific advancementwill be commensurate with the research effort allocation, with a higher research effort expected for a tenure track position.

The position will be offered at the rank of assistant or associateprofessor, in either a tenure or clinical (non-tenure) academictrack, dependent on the individual’s qualifications and goals, andwill be available as early as August 1, 2026. Tenure trackAssistant Professors should demonstrate promise as teachers, and inthe development of a program in disciplinary research/scholarshipcommensurate with appointment, have a developing record ofinstitutional and/or professional service, and display evidencethat they work well with colleagues and students. Tenure-trackAssociate Professors will have achieved and maintained a recognizedrecord in disciplinary research/scholarship, have achieved andmaintained a record of institutional and professional service, anddemonstrate evidence that they work well with colleagues andstudents. In most cases they will have served as an assistantprofessor for at least five years. Clinical track faculty primarilyprovide diagnostic expertise as well as participating in teaching,scholarly activities, and service to the university and professional organizations commensurate with their appointment. Tobe considered for a clinical associate professor appointment athire, the candidate’s application must demonstrate that they are aleading teacher and/or provider of public service in accordancewith their primary assigned responsibilities.

Qualified applicants must have:

• (1)a DVM (or equivalent degree) from an institution accredited by theAmerican Veterinary Medical Association or a relevant PhD
• (2)post-graduate experience and/or a strong documented interest inanalytical methodology and clinical veterinary pharmacology
• (3)excellent verbal and written communication skills and the abilityto work with others in a collegial, team atmosphere

Preferredqualifications include board certification by the American Collegeof Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology or the European College ofVeterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Salary will be commensuratewith qualifications and experience.
