Position: Stewardship and Conservation GIS Intern
Supervisor: Lina Denaroso, Conservation Manager
Location: Glen Leven Farm in Nashville, TN with some remote work possible
Unpaid Internship, College Credit Preferred
Internship Dates & Times
For at least 8 weeks, minimum of 8 hours per week, two four-hour days or one eight-hour day per week preferred
About The Land Trust for Tennessee
The Land Trust for Tennessee ("LTTN") is an accredited non-profit land conservation organization whose mission is to conserve the unique character of Tennessee's natural and historic landscapes and sites for future generations. The protection of Tennessee's vibrant landscapes is accomplished through a multitude of conservation tools, including conservation easements. LTTN has protected 137,000 acres through over 460 conservation projects across the state of Tennessee, with offices located in Nashville and Chattanooga.
The Opportunity
The Land Trust for Tennessee is seeking a bright, curious, and detail-oriented intern to become a part of The Land Trust team to learn about GIS for land conservation. The ideal candidate would have coursework in GIS, previous experience using ArcGIS Pro for an independent project, a desire to learn more about GIS, and a strong interest in Tennessee's natural and agricultural environments. This intern will have the opportunity to connect with staff members across the organization to learn about our work. This internship is based out of Nashville with the opportunity for some remote work.
Primary Responsibilities
• Conducts analyses of the natural resources conserved by LTTN's current protected properties using ArcGIS Pro, with support from the Conservation Manager
• Develops a table summarizing the natural resource attributes for each protected property
• Assists with property boundary research and plotting legal descriptions of protected properties in GIS, with support from the Conservation Manager
• Documents GIS analyses and legal description plotting, including tracking properties plotted, results, and data and methods used in GIS analyses
Desired Skills and Qualifications
  • A commitment to land conservation
  • Excellent communication abilities
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro including use of geoprocessing tools
  • Previous coursework in GIS, with courses beyond Introduction to GIS preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, and strong documentation and organization skills
  • Access to a personal computer capable of running ArcGIS Pro is preferred
  • Must have personal vehicle or reliable transportation

Internship Requirements:
  • Currently seeking environmental nonprofit experience while being currently enrolled, credit-seeking, and/or a degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate student, or within a year after graduation.
  • At the conclusion of this internship, each intern will share a presentation to staff that summarizes their internship, highlighting their accomplishments and what they learned.

All internships at The Land Trust for Tennessee are designed to be immersive. Interns are encouraged to express their interests, participate in organization-wide meetings, and connect with staff across departments when possible.
