Job description

Position Title: Boys Cross Country Assistant Coach

Reports To: Athletic Director / School Principal

Schedule: Fall 2026

Employment Type: Seasonal / Stipend Position/ 1 Year Contract

Position Summary

The Boys Cross Country Coach is responsible for developing, organizing, and leading the Elementary School Cross Country program and oversight of all assistant coaches on staff. This position provides direction to student-athletes to help them achieve excellence both on and off the field, while fostering an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, and academic achievement. The coach will collaborate closely with school leadership, athletic staff, and families to ensure the success and growth of the Cross-Country program in alignment with HPS's academic and athletic standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of the Cross-Country programs, including practices, games, conditioning, and off-season training.
  • Develop and implement game strategies, practice plans, and skill development sessions to enhance team performance.
  • Supervise and mentor assistant coaches, ensuring alignment with the program's philosophy and expectations.
  • Provide leadership and support to the coaching staff to ensure program continuity and player development.
  • Promote good sportsmanship, positive team culture, and academic accountability among student-athletes.
  • Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director, School Operations Manager, and Principal regarding team matters, student-athlete welfare, and scheduling.
  • Represent HPS Athletics positively within the community and at all interscholastic events.

Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree preferred; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Previous coaching experience required.
  • Proven ability to teach Cross-Country fundamentals, sportsmanship, leadership, and discipline. Experience working with students in an educational setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of Cross-Country systems, player development, and conditioning methods. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead by example, motivate young athletes, and foster a positive team environment. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, and the broader community. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and general computer operations. Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Commitment to HPS's mission of academic and athletic excellence.

Work Schedule & Availability

  • Must be available after school for practices, games, and team activities.
