What does a facility design engineer do?

A Facility Design Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the construction or renovation of buildings and facilities. Their work includes creating layouts, ensuring compliance with safety and building codes, and integrating mechanical, electrical, and structural systems within the facility. They often collaborate with architects, project managers, and other engineers to deliver efficient, functional, and cost-effective facility designs. Facility Design Engineers play a crucial role in optimizing space, energy use, and workflow within a facility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a facility design engineer?

To thrive as a Facility Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, facility layout planning, and construction standards, typically supported by a degree in engineering or architecture. Proficiency in CAD software, building information modeling (BIM) systems, and relevant certifications (such as PE or LEED) are often required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure facility designs meet safety, efficiency, and regulatory requirements while aligning with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by facility design engineers during the planning and construction phases?

Facility Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders—including architects, contractors, and regulatory agencies—to ensure designs meet all requirements. Managing project timelines while adapting to design changes or unforeseen site conditions is also common. Additionally, balancing cost constraints with the need for sustainable and efficient facility solutions can be demanding. Strong communication and project management skills are essential to navigate these challenges and deliver successful outcomes.

What is the difference between Facility Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectFacility Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like LEED or PE often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning building systems, construction sites, office settingsManufacturing, HVAC, automotive, industrial facilities
Industry UsageConstruction, architecture, facilities managementManufacturing, energy, automotive, aerospace

Facility Design Engineers focus on planning and designing building systems like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing for facilities, often working closely with architects and construction teams. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing mechanical systems across various industries, including manufacturing and energy. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve system design, Facility Design Engineers specialize in building infrastructure, whereas Mechanical Engineers work on mechanical components in diverse settings.

Are facility design engineers in demand?

Facility design engineers are in demand due to ongoing needs for efficient and sustainable building and infrastructure projects. They often work in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and commercial development, with demand driven by infrastructure upgrades and new construction requiring skills in CAD software, project management, and building codes.

We are looking for Test Facility Design Engineer for a global aerospace company. In this role, you will design, develop, integrate, and support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) and closed-loop test laboratories by creating schematics and system block diagrams, integrating hardware, planning laboratory infrastructure, and coordinating equipment required for aerospace system testing.

This is a 14-month contract (extensions likely), 40-hour-per-week (4-day 10-hour shifts per week) role, this is an Onsite role in Stratford, CT.

This is a W-2 role as a Stage 4 Solutions employee. Health benefits and 401K are offered.

Responsibilities:

  • The System Integration Lab Engineer provides hands on technical support and engineering expertise to Sikorsky’s Flight Controls Autonomy & Electrical (FCA&E) organization.
  • Reporting to the FCA&E Lab Lead, the incumbent will contribute to the design, development, integration, and verification of high fidelity hardware in the loop (HWIL) and closed loop test facilities and capabilities within the System Integration Laboratories (SILS).
  • This role blends systems engineering, test bed design / operation, and collaborative problem solving in a fast paced, cross functional environment.
  • The engineer will help ensure laboratory activities align with business objectives, program priorities, and Sikorsky technical standards while driving continuous improvement initiatives that increase lab productivity and capability.
  • HWIL/Closed Loop Development: Assist the FCA&E Lab Lead in designing, building, integrating, and testing HWIL and closed loop configurations within the SILS, ensuring compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and Sikorsky engineering practices.
  • Hardware Integration: Receive, stage, and integrate hardware from subsystem teams; manage interface control documents; and coordinate cross functional wiring, power, and data connections across system, segment, and supporting engineering groups.
  • Technical Collaboration: Participate actively in technical interchange meetings, provide clear status updates, and contribute to the preparation of deliverables for internal and external customers.
  • Risk & Issue Management: Track laboratory level risks and issues, maintain issue logs, and promptly elevate concerns to the FCA&E Lab Lead or program management while proposing mitigation actions.
  • Metrics & Reporting: Capture key performance indicators (KPIs) for SILS activities, generate concise status reports, and assist in metrics dashboards that reflect progress, resource utilization, and test outcomes.
  • Equipment & Facility Support: Help manage procurement of capital equipment, support facility modification projects, and assist with laboratory infrastructure planning (e.g., power distribution, network cabling, shielding, cooling).
  • Logistics Management: Order, receive, and track parts and consumables required for lab activities; maintain accurate inventory records; and coordinate with vendors and internal supply chains to ensure timely availability of components.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline lab processes, update work instructions, and adopt new tools or methodologies that enhance test efficiency and data quality.
  • Documentation: Produce and maintain engineering documentation—including schematics, block diagrams, procedures, results, and lessons learned packages—in accordance with Sikorsky configuration control requirements.
  • Design Tools: Develop detailed schematics and system block diagrams using industry standard tools such as Microsoft Visio, Mentor Graphics, Zuken, and Siemens NX/3DX.
