What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Facility Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Facility Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, facility layout planning, and construction standards, typically supported by a degree in engineering or architecture. Proficiency in CAD software, building information modeling (BIM) systems, and relevant certifications (such as PE or LEED) are often required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure facility designs meet safety, efficiency, and regulatory requirements while aligning with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Facility Design Engineers during the planning and construction phases?

Facility Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders—including architects, contractors, and regulatory agencies—to ensure designs meet all requirements. Managing project timelines while adapting to design changes or unforeseen site conditions is also common. Additionally, balancing cost constraints with the need for sustainable and efficient facility solutions can be demanding. Strong communication and project management skills are essential to navigate these challenges and deliver successful outcomes.

What does a Facility Design Engineer do?

A Facility Design Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the construction or renovation of buildings and facilities. Their work includes creating layouts, ensuring compliance with safety and building codes, and integrating mechanical, electrical, and structural systems within the facility. They often collaborate with architects, project managers, and other engineers to deliver efficient, functional, and cost-effective facility designs. Facility Design Engineers play a crucial role in optimizing space, energy use, and workflow within a facility.

What is the difference between Facility Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectFacility Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like LEED or PE often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning building systems, construction sites, office settingsManufacturing, HVAC, automotive, industrial facilities
Industry UsageConstruction, architecture, facilities managementManufacturing, energy, automotive, aerospace

Facility Design Engineers focus on planning and designing building systems like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing for facilities, often working closely with architects and construction teams. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing mechanical systems across various industries, including manufacturing and energy. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve system design, Facility Design Engineers specialize in building infrastructure, whereas Mechanical Engineers work on mechanical components in diverse settings.

Job description

MS Technology, Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer - Facility Design to support our client in Oak Ridge, TN.
Description
This role provides design engineering support for complex industrial and manufacturing facilities, from research and development through system design, installation, testing, and maintenance. The Project Engineer contributes to the design, assembly, testing, and long-term support of mechanical, process, and utility systems, supporting facility development, operation, and regulatory requirements. This position supports the Facility and Utility Design team.
Responsibilities
  • Create designs for a variety of process support and facility systems, including chemical, piping, HVAC, ventilation, structural, electromechanical, automation, and robotics systems.
  • Perform load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, and layout of ductwork, piping, and facility ventilation systems.
  • Contribute to a multidisciplinary team of process and facility engineers responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and operational support of multiple facility systems, including but not limited to HVAC, process exhaust, HEPA filtration, chilled water systems, process water, chemical supply, process gas supply, and dust collection systems.
  • Support facility design, process design, and manufacturing development teams.
  • Create and document engineering designs, including requirements, specifications, mechanical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and engineering calculations.
  • Conduct energy modeling, simulations, and engineering calculations to improve efficiency and sustainability while ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with design teams to ensure seamless integration of HVAC and mechanical systems into overall facility designs and manufacturing processes.
  • Work with contractors to clarify design intent, resolve technical issues, and provide solutions to site challenges.
  • Select and procure components for process and utility systems such as motors, drives, sensors, pumps, and valves.
  • Assemble components to support prototype development and system testing.
  • Operate process and utility equipment to perform design verification and validation, conduct quality assurance checks, and perform site inspections to verify compliance and address deficiencies.
  • Perform design engineering activities supporting manufacturing operations, including reliability improvement, maintenance planning, process optimization, failure analysis, and cost estimation.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and maintenance plans for process equipment and support systems.
  • Participate in efforts to develop standardized engineering workflows and documentation.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and effective communication at all times.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to junior engineers on task execution and technical development.
  • Lead small engineering teams to solve complex technical problems and deliver high-quality work products on schedule and within budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an ABET EAC-accredited program is required. ETAC-accredited Engineering Technology programs will not be considered.
  • 5 years or more of relevant work experience is preferred. Advanced degrees may be in lieu of some years of experience.
  • CAD and P&ID experience required.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing facility design, including lean manufacturing principles.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable engineering codes and standards related to mechanical and process systems.
  • Experience with 2D and 3D engineering and manufacturing tools.
