A facilities engineer oversees the design process of buildings and the systems therein. A typical job for a facilities engineer is the design of industrial and manufacturing plants. As a facilities engineer, your responsibilities revolve around the production of blueprints and models using a drafting program. While you are often responsible for designing new construction, you may also be hired to address flaws in existing facilities, whether it be in the building itself, or a needed improvement for internal systems. To pursue a career as a facilities engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering. You also need to obtain a professional engineer certificate from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). They divide the exam into two parts, which you take after graduation, and after four years of experience, respectively.
| Aspect | Facilities Engineer | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in engineering, facilities management certifications | Bachelor's in mechanical engineering, professional engineering license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Building systems, maintenance, and operations in commercial or industrial facilities | Design, analysis, and testing of mechanical systems in various industries |
| Industry Usage | Real estate, manufacturing, facilities management | Automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, HVAC |
Facilities Engineers focus on maintaining and optimizing building systems and infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical systems, often working on product development or machinery. While both roles require engineering knowledge, Facilities Engineers are more involved in building operations, whereas Mechanical Engineers focus on mechanical design and development.
