Job description

Facilities Engineer / Building Engineer

Location: Alexandria, VA
Pay Rate: $30.00/hour
Schedule: Full-Time


If you are an experienced Facilities Maintenance Technician, Senior Maintenance Technician, Facilities Supervisor, Maintenance Mechanic, Assistant Chief Engineer, or hands-on Facilities Manager who has developed strong building systems knowledge and is ready for greater responsibility, we encourage you to apply.


We are looking for someone who understands how buildings operate and has hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other facility systems.


What You'll Do

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on building mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general facility issues.
  • Monitor and respond to building equipment and system problems.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment such as air handlers, rooftop units, pumps, motors, VAVs, boilers, chillers, and related equipment.
  • Monitor Building Automation Systems (BAS) and respond to alarms and operating conditions.
  • Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and respond to service/work orders.
  • Inspect building equipment and identify potential problems before failures occur.
  • Perform basic electrical and plumbing troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors when specialized repairs are required.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and work-order records.
  • Assist with building safety, emergency response, and operational inspections.
  • Support and provide guidance to custodial and facilities personnel as needed.
  • Assist with exterior building and grounds-related maintenance issues.

We are especially interested in candidates with 3+ years of hands-on facilities or commercial building maintenance experience.

Leadership Experience Is a Plus

You do not need to have been a Chief Engineer.

We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated leadership by:

  • Training or mentoring newer maintenance employees
  • Assigning or coordinating maintenance work
  • Working with outside vendors and contractors
  • Leading preventive maintenance activities
  • Serving as the go-to person for difficult maintenance issues
  • Supervising facilities, maintenance, or custodial personnel


Preferred Certifications

Any of the following are a plus, but candidates with strong relevant experience are encouraged to apply:

  • EPA 608 / EPA Universal
  • HVAC Certification
  • Stationary Engineer License
  • NIULPE Certification
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Building Automation System training/certification
