What is an F1 materials engineer?

F1 Materials Engineers are specialists who work within Formula 1 teams to research, develop, and select materials used in race car construction. They focus on optimizing components for performance, strength, and weight by leveraging advanced materials like carbon fiber composites, titanium, and specialized alloys. Their work ensures that every part of the car meets strict safety standards while maximizing speed and efficiency. Materials Engineers collaborate closely with design, aerodynamics, and manufacturing teams to implement innovative solutions and maintain a competitive edge on the track.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an F1 materials engineer?

To thrive as an F1 Materials Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field, often with a bachelor’s or master’s degree and experience in motorsport or high-performance automotive environments. Expertise with materials characterization tools, CAD software, finite element analysis (FEA), and knowledge of composite materials and manufacturing processes are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies are essential for developing innovative, lightweight, and high-strength components that can withstand the extreme conditions of Formula 1 racing and provide a competitive edge.

What unique challenges do F1 materials engineers face when developing components for high-performance race cars?

F1 Materials Engineers often encounter the challenge of balancing extreme performance requirements with strict weight and safety regulations. They must select and test advanced materials, such as carbon fiber composites and lightweight alloys, that can withstand high temperatures and stress while minimizing mass. The fast-paced environment means rapid prototyping and frequent collaboration with design, aerodynamics, and manufacturing teams are essential. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving FIA regulations and material innovations is crucial for success in this role.

What is the difference between F1 Materials Engineer vs F1 Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC

Job Summary

We’re seeking a performance drive MGU (Motor Generator Unit E-Motor) Lead to join our ERS (Energy Recovery System) Team in Concord, NC. In this critical leadership role, you’ll lead the design, integration, and optimization of the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) e-motor system, focusing on high-speed performance, efficiency, structural integrity, rotor-stator dynamics, thermal management, and mechanical reliability under extreme racing conditions.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams in electromagnetics, mechanical design, power electronics, controls, thermal management, and manufacturing to optimize MGU packaging and performance within the hybrid powertrain while adhering to FIA technical regulations. Lead prototype validation, testing programs, and continuous improvements to deliver race-winning e-motor solutions essential for championship success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish technical requirements, performance targets, and development goals for MGU e-motor components, including rotors, stators, bearings, housings, and thermal interfaces.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary teams—electromagnetics, mechanical design, thermal, controls, and advanced manufacturing—to integrate and optimize the MGU within the hybrid powertrain, ensuring maximum power density, efficiency, and race reliability.
  • Oversee prototype development, dynamometer testing programs, and data-driven iterations guiding engineering functions to achieve validated, race-ready solutions.
  • Direct design reviews, FMEA processes, documentation, and compliance with FIA F1 regulations on MGU power, weight, RPM limits, and safety interfaces.
  • Foster innovation by driving research into next-gen materials (e.g., advanced composites, magnetic alloys), manufacturing advances, and DFM/DFA principles to enable scalable, high-quality e-motor production.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (or related) with 8+ years in high-speed electric motors, motorsport ERS, or hybrid powertrains; Master's/PhD with 5+ years preferred.
  • Expertise in CAD (NX preferred), CAE/FEA, and PLM (Teamcenter) for e-motor structural and thermal simulations.
  • Proven experience with rotor-stator integration, high-speed dynamics, bearing selection, vibration mitigation, and FIA F1 power unit regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on motorsport prototyping, dynamometer testing, and trackside support.
  • Knowledge of advanced electromagnetic materials, high-precision manufacturing, and ML/DoE for motor optimization.
  • GD&T standards, quality systems, and cross-functional leadership in fast-paced environments.
Why Join Us

You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability and performance of a next-generation Formula 1 power unit. Our culture rewards precision, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of performance.
