What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in export roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in export roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex international regulations, managing logistics across multiple countries, and dealing with fluctuating exchange rates. To address these, staying updated on trade compliance requirements and building strong relationships with reliable freight forwarders is essential. Additionally, effective communication with both internal teams and external partners helps streamline processes and resolve issues quickly. Many organizations also provide training or mentorship programs to help new team members adapt to these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an export specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Export Specialist, you need strong knowledge of international trade regulations, logistics, and export documentation, typically supported by a degree in business, international trade, or a related field. Familiarity with export management systems, ERP software, and certifications such as Certified Export Specialist (CES) are commonly required. Excellent negotiation, organizational, and cross-cultural communication skills help build relationships with clients and navigate global markets effectively. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring compliance, minimizing risks, and driving successful international business operations.

How much do exporters make?

Exporters' earnings vary based on experience, industry, and location, but they typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually. Successful exporters often have strong negotiation skills, knowledge of international trade regulations, and may earn commissions or bonuses based on sales performance.

Which course is best for export?

For an export job, courses in international trade, supply chain management, or logistics are beneficial. Certifications like the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) or courses in foreign trade regulations can enhance your qualifications and understanding of export procedures.

What does an export specialist do?

An Export Specialist manages the shipment of goods and services from one country to another, ensuring compliance with international trade laws and regulations. They handle documentation, coordinate with customs, arrange transportation, and work closely with suppliers and customers to ensure timely delivery. Export Specialists also monitor trade agreements, tariffs, and quotas to facilitate smooth export operations and may resolve any issues related to shipping or customs clearance.

Summary:ย

Fior di Sole is seeking an experienced, driven Export Sales Manager to lead and grow our international wine sales business. This is a senior role responsible for building and executing our global export strategy - opening new markets, deepening distributor partnerships, and building long-term brand equity in the export market.

The Export Sales Manager will own the full commercial relationship with our international distributor and importer network, develop new market opportunities, and serve as the primary brand ambassador for Fior di Sole beyond U.S. borders. This role requires a commercially minded wine professional who thrives in a proactive fast-paced environment, is comfortable working across cultures and time zones, and can translate market insights into tangible revenue growth.

Reports to: The Board
Classification: Full-time, Exemptย
Compensation: $120,000 - $150,000 annually

You Will:ย

  • Own and grow export sales across global markets, identifying and prioritizing high-potential regions and channels to continuously expand Fior di Soleโ€™s international footprint
  • Develop and execute strategic market plans with volume, revenue, and distribution targets for each territory
  • Identify and prioritize new market opportunities; lead entry-to-market planning and partner selection for expansion into new countries and regions
  • Manage and continuously strengthen partnerships with distributors, importers, and agents; conduct regular business reviews and hold partners accountable to agreed goals
  • Oversee pricing strategy, programming, and promotional activity to ensure market competitiveness and margin integrity
  • Lead launches of new products across international markets, including private label development where applicable
  • Develop and manage sales within travel retail channels (cruise lines, airlines, and duty-free operators) as part of the broader international channel mix
  • Represent Fior di Sole at international trade shows, wine fairs, distributor/importer sales meetings, and key account presentations
  • Conduct in-market visits and trade tastings to reinforce brand positioning
  • Collaborate with marketing to develop market-specific materials, digital assets, and campaign support
  • Monitor competitive activity, consumer trends, and regulatory developments across key markets; translate findings into actionable recommendations
  • Manage export logistics coordination with operations, including forecasting, inventory planning, shipment scheduling, and order accuracy
  • Ensure full compliance with import/export regulations, international labeling requirements, and documentation for all markets
  • Manage the export sales budget; track and report on performance against financial targets regularly
  • Maintain accurate customer records, account activity logs, market data, and pipeline reporting
  • Work cross-functionally with finance, marketing, and operations to ensure seamless execution of international business
    ย

You Have:ย

  • 5+ years of export or international sales experience, preferably within the wine industryย
  • Strong understanding of global wine markets and distribution channelsย
  • Experience working with distributors or importers preferredย
  • Ability to support sales growth initiatives and manage multiple marketsย
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to work across time zonesย
  • Willingness to travel internationally as neededย
  • Strong relationship-building skills and team-oriented mindsetย
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to be ensured through the companyย
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends for eventsย
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Our Benefits:ย
