What is an experiential graphic designer?

Experiential graphic designers are professionals who combine graphic design, architecture, and interior design to create visual experiences within physical spaces. Their work often includes designing signage, wayfinding systems, exhibition displays, branded environments, and interactive installations that help people navigate and connect with spaces. They play a key role in enhancing the user experience in places like museums, airports, corporate offices, retail stores, and public spaces by blending storytelling, information, and aesthetics.

How does an experiential graphic designer typically collaborate with architects and interior designers on projects?

Experiential Graphic Designers often work closely with architects and interior designers to ensure that wayfinding, signage, and branded environments are seamlessly integrated into the overall spatial design. Collaboration usually involves participating in project meetings, reviewing architectural plans, and developing design concepts that complement the physical space. Effective communication and a shared understanding of project goals are key, as the graphic designer must balance aesthetic considerations with practical constraints such as materials, lighting, and user experience. This integrated approach helps create cohesive and engaging environments for end users.

What is the difference between Experiential Graphic Designer vs Environmental Graphic Designer?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an experiential graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Experiential Graphic Designer, you need a solid background in graphic design, spatial design, and branding, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, CAD tools, and wayfinding systems is typically required. Strong collaboration, creativity, and communication skills help you work effectively with architects, clients, and multidisciplinary teams. These skills are vital for creating engaging, functional environments that communicate messages and enhance user experiences.

Job description

IA Interior Architects translates client goals, brand and culture into powerful environments built around people, processes, technologies and business drivers. Our clients in diverse markets worldwide require high-performance, visually compelling and sustainable environments to move their enterprise forward, support their culture, engage their staff, integrate technology and drive efficiencies. As architects, designers, workplace strategists and environmental specialists in the largest global architecture firm concentrating exclusively on interiors, we help clients articulate and align their business strategies and core values with the dynamic use of space.

Our team members are highly collaborative, creative, professional, and entrepreneurial. Joining our team requires skill, passion, curiosity, collaboration, drive, a sense of humor, and a love of interiors. We are currently seeking a full-time Intermediate Experiential Graphic Designer for our Boston studio. Under the supervision of EGD design leadership, the Intermediate Experiential Graphic Designer performs a wide variety of tasks.

This is a hybrid position, working 3 days/week in-person.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with internal teams and participate in the exploration of opportunities to amplify the character of a place, creatively expressing brand identity in captivating and imaginative ways.
  • Work with the project team to conceptualize, design, and document impactful experiences, including graphics, art, displays, signage/wayfinding, and interactive experiences for a broad spectrum of client brands, delivered as both 2D environmental graphics and 3D dimensional installations.
  • Participate in creating a cohesive visual style for each project that guides the graphic development of individual elements.
  • Design and develop project presentations, and edit plans, elevations, renderings, and mood boards to represent and document the design.
  • Produce project tasks independently; solicit review and direction from team leadership; and implement feedback and revisions with accuracy.

Required Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, or Architecture.
  • 3+ years of design experience in a studio environment, with some environmental graphic design (EGD) experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Solid branding and graphic design sensibilities, with an understanding of color usage, typography, and composition. Ability to think spatially and visualize design within the built environment.
  • Some experience across the phases of EGD projects, with the ability to communicate progress to the team.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to present to internal teams.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign [with CADtools], Illustrator, Acrobat) and MS Office required.
  • Strong work ethic, with the ability to be efficient, proactive, flexible, and maintain a positive spirit. Desire to work collaboratively with architects, interior designers, and strategists in integrated, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bonus: Experience with Revit and 3D modeling software (Enscape, SketchUp, V-Ray, 3ds Max); ability to hand sketch or digitally render; and experience in video editing or creative technology are a plus.

Please submit a portfolio or work examples with your application for consideration.
