Job description

The Payroll Tax Lead provides strategic and operational leadership for the payroll tax function. You will be responsible for overseeing a team of Payroll Tax Specialists while remaining actively engaged in day-to-day high-level compliance and reporting tasks. This role ensures all quarterly and yearly goals are met, deadlines are strictly adhered to, and all multi-state and domestic tax regulations are followed for a large-scale workforce (10,000+ employees).

  • Minimum Education & Experience

  •  Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience within a Payroll Tax function.

  • Proven experience working within a large-scale enterprise environment (10,000+ employees).

  • Extensive knowledge of multi-state payroll tax laws and accounting principles.

  • Technical Skills & Certifications

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency in payroll software, specifically SAP, Oracle, and ADP Tax Compliance tools.

  • Advanced reporting skills, with the ability to create complex queries and conduct audits to ensure data controls.

  • Preferred Skills & Experience

  • International Tax Experience: Background in foreign national payroll and 3rd party expatriate management. Background with Canada and Philippines a significant plus.

  • Industry Expertise: General knowledge of, or experience working within, the Industrial Construction industry.

  • Leadership Presence: Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with a focus on ethics and confidentiality.

  • Strategic Change Management: Demonstrated experience leading system conversions, implementations, or large-scale process improvement initiatives. Experience with mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations

  • Team Leadership & Strategy

  •  Lead and mentor a team of Payroll Tax Specialists to ensure accuracy, data integrity, and professional development.

  • Drive the execution of all quarterly and year-end reporting processes, including W-2s, tax filings, and complex reconciliations.

  • Oversee process improvement efforts to maximize the efficiency and accuracy of domestic and international payroll data.

  • Manage senior-level relationships with external 3rd party tax vendors (e.g., ADP), ensuring accountability and resolution of agency notices.

  • Domestic & Multi-State Tax Compliance (Lead & Hands-on)

  •  Execute and oversee weekly and quarterly tax deposits, wage adjustments, and the filing of W-2C, UI, or 941 Amendments.

  •  Ensure strict compliance with multi-state legal requirements, company policies, and evolving tax regulations.

  • Collaborate with Accounting to manage changes affecting payroll tax accruals and resolve complex financial discrepancies.

  • Direct all projects related to payroll tax compliance and routine system maintenance/updates.

  • Audit & Agency Notice Management: You will serve as the primary point of contact for reviewing and addressing state and federal agency notices, as well as managing complex payroll tax audits to ensure total compliance.

  • International & Expatriate Payroll (Support & Oversight)

  • Oversee international payroll processing, working with vendors to ensure the delivery of foreign tax liabilities.

  • Manage Expat payroll functions, including HYPO tax management, allowance changes, and shadow payroll processing.

  • Coordinate with Treasury to ensure timely wire transfers for international tax remittances. #LI-CC1
