What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Exotic Animal Veterinarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exotic Animal Veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, state licensure, and specialized knowledge in caring for non-traditional or exotic species. Experience with diagnostic tools, anesthesia, and advanced laboratory equipment specific to exotic animals is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication with pet owners are vital soft skills in this field. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure the well-being of diverse species and to provide effective, compassionate care in a specialized veterinary setting.

What are common challenges faced by exotic animal veterinarians in their daily work?

Exotic animal veterinarians often encounter unique challenges, such as treating a wide variety of species with differing anatomical and physiological needs. Diagnosing illnesses can be more complex due to limited species-specific research and subtle symptoms. Additionally, building trust with both the animals and their owners requires strong communication skills and patience. The role also demands ongoing education to stay updated on best practices, as treatments and medications may vary significantly from those used in traditional pet care.

What are exotic dancers?

Exotic dancers are performers who entertain audiences through dance routines that often incorporate elements of sensuality or striptease. They typically perform in nightclubs, gentlemen’s clubs, or at private events. Exotic dancers use music, costumes, and choreography to create engaging performances, and their work may involve both solo and group acts. While the job can be physically demanding, it requires confidence, poise, and a strong sense of personal boundaries.

Associate Veterinarian - Avian & Exotic Species Focus

Full-Time    4 Days/Week    Monday-Friday Only    No Weekends

Most practices treat exotic medicine as an afterthought. You've spent your career trying to find the one that doesn't.

At Canobie Lake Veterinary Hospital, avian and exotic medicine isn't a side service-it's half of who we are. Fifty percent of our patients are birds, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, pocket pets, and amphibians. We have built our team, our culture, and our systems around delivering top-notch care to every species that walks, hops, slithers, or flies through our door.

If you love the complexity of exotic medicine, thrive in a hospital that actually takes it seriously, and want a role that respects your time and your expertise-keep reading.

Who We Are

Canobie Lake Veterinary Hospital is an 20-year AAHA-accredited general practice and the 2024 AAHA Practice of the Year. We are a multi-species hospital in Windham, NH that has built a genuine reputation for excellence in both companion animal and exotic medicine. Our culture runs on Conscious Care-a trademarked program developed by our owner that centers on compassion for self, team, clients, patients, and community. This isn't a buzzword. It's how we actually operate.

We are partnered with Alliance Animal Health, but our owner-a 28-year veterinary practice veteran and passionate advocate for both her patients and her team-remains deeply invested and actively involved. She has created a hospital where people want to stay, grow, and do their best work.

Your Patients

This is the part that sets us apart. Half of our caseload is avian and exotic, which means you'll spend your days working with the full spectrum of non-traditional species:

  • Birds (psittacines, passerines, raptors, and more)
  • Rabbits
  • Guinea pigs
  • Ferrets
  • Reptiles (lizards, snakes, chelonians, and beyond)
  • Pocket pets (hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, chinchillas)
  • Amphibians

No two days look alike. The diagnostic puzzles are real, the medicine is nuanced, and the clients are devoted. This is exotic medicine done right-with the equipment, the support staff, and the culture to back it up.
