Job description

We are currently searching for an experienced Traffic Project Engineer to support our Southwest Region located in either Austin, Round Rock, or San Antonio, TX.


The successful candidate will work on challenging transportation design projects providing technical expertise and ensuring compliance with locality and state DOT standards. The candidate will serve as Task Manager and collaborate with multidisciplinary team and provide guidance and direction to project team for various traffic design tasks on roadway, bridge and interchange improvements, intersection modifications and pedestrian/bike facilities projects. This position offers an excellent career opportunity with tremendous growth potential.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Prepare traffic signal design plans for new intersections and signal modifications to facilitate multimodal accommodations
  • Prepare temporary traffic control plan/traffic management plan (TMP) and signing, pavement marking plans
  • Prepare streetlight design plan and perform photometric analysis using Agi32
  • Prepare technical reports for IJR/IMR, and traffic/safety/road diet studies
  • Prepare Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design plans
  • Prepare quantities and develop PS&E packages supporting highway design projects
  • Assist in preparing conceptual intersection layouts, schematics, signal timings and engineering reports
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers
  • Attend project meetings with clients

What you need to have:

  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • 5-10 years of traffic engineering experience
  • EIT is required
  • Proficiency in OpenRoads
  • Familiarity with TxDOT and/or general DOT traffic design standards, MUTCD and AASHTO
  • Proficiency in traffic analyses software such as VISSIM, Synchro/Simtraffic, Sidra Intersection, HCS
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Bonus points if you have:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • PE in Texas
  • Self-starter and capable of completing tasks with minimal oversight
