Executive Startup Data Engineer information

What is an executive startup data engineer?

Executive Startup Data Engineers are senior-level professionals who design, build, and oversee data systems and strategies within startup companies. They bridge the gap between technical data engineering and high-level business objectives, often leading small teams or entire data departments. Their responsibilities include developing data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and delivering insights that drive business growth. In a startup environment, they must be both hands-on and strategic, adapting quickly to evolving technical and business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive startup data engineer?

To thrive as an Executive Startup Data Engineer, you need expertise in data architecture, advanced analytics, and programming languages like Python or Scala, along with a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data platforms (such as Hadoop or Spark), cloud services (like AWS or Google Cloud), and relevant certifications are commonly expected. Leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for driving data initiatives and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment. These skills and qualities are vital for building scalable data solutions that support business growth and innovation in a startup setting.

What are some unique challenges executive startup data engineers face when building data infrastructure in early-stage companies?

Executive Startup Data Engineers often encounter the challenge of building scalable and reliable data pipelines from scratch with limited resources and rapidly evolving business needs. They must balance hands-on technical implementation with strategic planning, frequently adapting solutions as product priorities shift. Collaboration with founders, product teams, and business stakeholders is crucial to ensure that data systems align with overall company goals. Additionally, they may be responsible for mentoring junior engineers and setting data governance practices that will scale as the company grows.

Job description

Polco is seeking an Account Executive (AE) to accelerate our mission of helping governments make better decisions through trusted data and inclusive civic participation. The AE will be focused on driving growth by selling Polco's engagement platform, benchmark surveys, and data dashboards to government agencies across your territory. This is a hunter role focused on net-new accounts. You'll be joining a small and driven Revenue Team, and play a key role in shaping Polco's growth in the GovTech market.

Goals & Expectations:

  • Expand Polco's footprint by selling our civic engagement and data solutions to cities, counties, and states
  • Build trusting relationships with government leaders, staff, and stakeholders, positioning Polco as a partner in transparent and equitable decision-making
  • Meet and exceed sales targets through consistent pipeline generation, effective territory planning, and closing new business; targets will include sales quotas and top-of-funnel prospecting metrics
  • Champion Polco's mission by connecting our tools to outcomes that matter-community trust, inclusive participation, and evidence-based policymaking
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as Polco's business and customer needs continue to grow and develop

Day-to-Day Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to inbound leads within your territory and advance them through the sales process to close
  • Prospect and generate pipeline independently through research, cold outreach, networking, and referrals
  • Conduct discovery calls and product demos that translate technical capabilities into clear value for public sector leaders
  • Maintain a healthy pipeline and create accurate forecasts in Hubspot
  • Partner with our Marketing, Survey Research, and Product Teams to align client messaging and provide market insights
  • Facilitate seamless handoffs to Account Management and Customer Success Teams for renewals and expansions
  • Travel to events and conferences as needed

Experience & Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of demonstrated sales experience with complex, bureaucratic sales cycles; significant GovTech or public sector experience is highly preferred but not required
  • Expertise in solution and value-based sales methodologies
  • Strong prospecting skills with the ability to independently generate and sustain pipeline through research, outreach, and networking
  • Ability to build trust with public sector leaders by communicating complex data and engagement concepts in accessible, relatable language
  • Patience and persistence to navigate public sector sales cycles while maintaining urgency and focus
  • Driven to achieve ambitious sales goals while staying aligned with Polco's mission and goals
  • Adaptability to thrive in a startup environment with changing priorities and high autonomy
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Compensation:

  • Base Salary: $80,000-$115,000
  • On-Target Earnings (OTE): $160,000-$200,000 (base plus commission)
  • Base salary will be determined by relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated track record within the posted range; OTE includes base salary plus commission potential based on achievement of sales targets

Perks & Benefits:

  • Exceptional benefits package including dental, medical, and vision coverage
  • Remote work environment
  • Flexible work hours, 14 company holidays, and generous paid time off
