Job description

Organization Description

Among the many gifts that make the town of Strasburg special, perhaps the most unique is its historical inheritance. The number, variety, and beauty of its surviving historic places, and the stories that accompany them, truly set Strasburg apart, even within historic Lancaster County, Pa. Since its founding in 1972, the Strasburg Heritage Society (SHS) has focused on the four pillars of its mission: Preservation, Education, Appreciation, and Restoration (P.E.A.R). The Society has researched Strasburg’s history and presented it through events and publications, stewarded a collection of cherished artifacts, and acquired historic properties.

But as with other history organizations, SHS is challenged to convey the relevance of local history to our 21st century audience. Our answer is to reimagine Strasburg’s tangible history as a framework for unifying and strengthening our community. For people who live in a historic place, familiar surroundings come alive when their history is revealed - the events, characters, lifestyles, values, culture, conflicts, and lessons. By presenting an open-ended historical narrative, today’s residents are invited to continue traditions that they value and to add their personal stories to build on that narrative. Bonds of community form as neighbors understand that they share a special place and a common heritage.

Our board has implemented successful initiatives to move SHS forward, and has ideas for future actions. Open seats on the board give SHS an opportunity to renew our team with skilled people who can enhance our future work. We’re working to recruit people with demonstrated know-how in board governance, fundraising, communication, building maintenance and restoration, and secretarial work.

Role Description

Can you help Strasburg Heritage Society become a model for small historical societies in the modern world? Your abilities in fundraising will be a key to our success. The SHS by‑laws define a “second vice president” role. Since fundraising is a core activity for any nonprofit, with participation by all board members, this is considered to be a leadership position and will be assigned the title of “second vice president – fundraising specialist”.

SHS has no paid staff and no executive director outside of the board, so our board is a “working board.” We count on all board members to contribute to implementing the initiatives that the board enacts.

Can you help Strasburg Heritage Society become a model for small historical societies in the modern world? Your experience and focus on detail and accuracy will be a great asset. The secretary role is specifically required by the SHS by-laws. You’ll be a voting member of our 11 member Board of Trustees. SHS has no paid staff and no executive director outside of the board, so our board is a “working board.” We count on all board members to contribute to implementing the initiatives that the board enacts.

Roles and responsibilities

In the role of secretary, you will:

  • Issue notices of board meetings.
  • Capture the activity and decisions of board meetings by taking notes or recordings, and then publish written minutes in a timely manner to create a record of the proceedings.
  • Maintain organized minutes and records of meetings of the board and the Society.
  • Sign papers, contracts, and documents on behalf of the Society, as required by the office or as directed by the board.
  • Mail or email all correspondence and notices as directed by the board.
  • Serve as custodian of all records and legal documents of the Society, except those of the treasurer.

We expect all board members to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs.
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate and vote in board meetings.
  • Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Strasburg Heritage Society to advance its mission.
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization.
  • Engage in opportunities to learn about and better understand the Strasburg community.
  • Learn the broad outlines of Strasburg’s history.
  • Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and experience to the organization.
  • Become a member of SHS. The membership fee is a nominal $20.

SHS does not require a mandatory donation beyond the $20 membership fee. We understand that the essential value that you bring is the work that you do on our behalf, with the benefit of your dedication, skills, and creativity. The minimum anticipated time commitment is 5 hours per month. Board members may work extra hours as needed and as they are able.

Our Commitment to Nondiscrimination

The stories of the people of Strasburg are at the core of our mission. We serve community that includes people of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, beliefs, and life experiences, and we welcome everyone as part of the Society. Board members are expected to treat all people respectfully and without discrimination. SHS is recruiting publicly for board positions to ensure that we move beyond our immediate networks to build the best possible board, made up of respectful people with diverse backgrounds and points of view and demonstrated skills and experiences.
