Job description

Position Overview
Power your future with Qualus in our Specialized Field department as a Senior Substation Technical Advisor. The Senior Substation Technical Advisor provides technical leadership and oversight for the construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of high-voltage substations supporting a mission-critical campus. This role works closely with field technicians, contractors, engineers, construction and project management teams, and executive stakeholders to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical electrical infrastructure. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in substation engineering, protection and controls, commissioning, and field operations, with the ability to provide technical guidance and practical solutions across both new construction and existing energized substations.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for substation construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and reliability.
  • Provide technical oversight of multiple energized substations supporting mission critical loads.
  • Review and support substation design, protection schemes, relay settings, commissioning plans, and operational procedures.
  • Provide expertise in protective relays, protection and control systems, SCADA systems, communications, and substation automation.
  • Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, outage planning, switching activities, and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor substation construction activities and act as the owner's technical representative during project execution.
  • Interface with engineering firms, EPC contractors, utilities, commissioning providers, construction managers, and facility operations teams.
  • Review construction deliverables, testing documentation, schedules, and quality processes.
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, energization, and project turnover activities.
  • Evaluate the condition and performance of substation equipment including transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, grounding systems, battery systems, protection panels, and associated apparatus.
  • Develop technical reports, recommendations, and professional communications for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support emergency response and operational troubleshooting as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with high-voltage substations, including construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
    • Protective relays
    • Protection and control systems
    • SCADA and substation communications
    • High-voltage substation apparatus
    • Electrical system troubleshooting
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, relay schematics, protection drawings, and construction documents.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with field personnel, contractors, engineers, project managers, and executive leadership.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and technical leadership abilities.
