Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Executive Underwriter to lead underwriting initiatives within a complex commercial insurance portfolio focused on delegated authority, MGA partnerships, and single risk Specialty business. This role is responsible for driving profitable growth, managing underwriting performance, and developing long-term distribution relationships while maintaining disciplined risk selection and regulatory compliance. In addition, this candidate will assist in the organizing and launching of new Specialty segments in the United States.
The ideal candidate will possess advanced expertise in Commercial Property amp; Casualty underwriting, portfolio analytics, and program management, with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the implementation of underwriting strategy and portfolio management for delegated authority and program business across multiple commercial P amp;C lines
  • Serve as a liaison and assist with project management for the coordination and launch of new Specialty lines segments in the United States.
  • Manage and strengthen MGA, broker, and agency relationships to support profitable growth and long-term strategic partnerships.
  • Independently underwrite complex new and renewal business, including risks requiring advanced underwriting judgment and referral review.
  • Evaluate financial statements, exposure data, claims trends, and market intelligence to determine pricing, coverage structure, and risk appetite alignment.
  • Monitor portfolio performance through loss ratio analysis, pricing adequacy reviews, profitability reporting, and trend analysis.
  • Partner closely with actuarial, claims, compliance, legal, finance, and reinsurance teams to optimize underwriting strategy and program performance.
  • Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, growth strategies, and operational best practices.
  • Organize and facilitate operational audits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and corporate governance standards in partnership with HDI’s audit and compliance teams.
  • Prepare executive-level reports and recommendations related to underwriting performance, portfolio health, and strategic initiatives.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource and mentor to underwriting staff, supporting talent development and underwriting consistency.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and regulatory developments to proactively adjust underwriting appetite and business strategy.
  • Support underwriting transformation initiatives, including process improvement, workflow optimization, and data-driven decision-making.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • 8+ years of Commercial Insurance Underwriting experience with strong expertise in delegated authority, program business, or specialty insurance.
  • Advanced knowledge of Commercial Property amp; Casualty coverage forms, underwriting practices, and portfolio management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage underwriting profitability and maintain accountability for portfolio performance.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and decision-making capabilities with proven underwriting judgment.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Experience collaborating across underwriting, claims, actuarial, legal, compliance, and reinsurance functions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in underwriting analytics, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and reporting tools.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, AU, ARM, or progress toward certification preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range for this position is $170,000–$200,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on experience, education, and geographic location.
