Industry UsageUsed in tech companies emphasizing system visibility and performance analysisCommon in cloud services, SaaS, and large-scale web services

The Executive Observability Engineer primarily focuses on implementing and optimizing observability tools to ensure system health, while the Site Reliability Engineer concentrates on maintaining system reliability and automating infrastructure. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their strategic versus operational focus.

What are some common challenges executive observability engineers face when implementing organization-wide monitoring solutions?

Executive Observability Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse monitoring tools across legacy and modern systems, ensuring data consistency, and balancing comprehensive visibility with system performance. Coordinating with multiple teams to align observability goals and fostering a culture of proactive monitoring can also require strong communication and leadership skills. Successfully managing these complexities leads to more resilient infrastructure and improved incident response times.

What is an executive observability engineer?

Executive Observability Engineers are specialized IT professionals who design and manage systems that monitor, analyze, and optimize the health and performance of an organization's technology infrastructure. They focus on providing high-level visibility into applications, networks, and services, enabling executives to make data-driven decisions. These engineers implement observability tools, create dashboards, and generate reports that translate complex technical metrics into actionable business insights. Their work is crucial for ensuring system reliability, quick incident response, and continuous improvement across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive observability engineer?

To thrive as an Executive Observability Engineer, you need deep expertise in performance monitoring, distributed systems, and troubleshooting, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Job description

Distinguished Technologist, Distributed Systems & Agentic Query Optimization

This role has been designed as 'Hybrid' with an expectation that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the global edge-to-cloud company advancing the way people live and work. We help companies connect, protect, analyze, and act on their data and applications wherever they live, from edge to cloud, so they can turn insights into outcomes at the speed required to thrive in today's complex world. Our culture thrives on finding new and better ways to accelerate what's next. We know varied backgrounds are valued and succeed here. We have the flexibility to manage our work and personal needs. We make bold moves, together, and are a force for good. If you are looking to stretch and grow your career our culture will embrace you. Open up opportunities with HPE.

HPE is building a next‑generation platform services ecosystem that unifies multiple cloud‑native acquisitions into an integrated Hybrid Cloud services suite. This senior technical role will architect and build large‑scale distributed systems, federated data services, and customer‑facing cloud services. You will be a hands‑on technologist who shapes architecture, prototypes and ships high‑impact systems, mentors engineering teams, and helps define long‑term technical strategy across business units.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect, design, and scale large cloud‑native distributed services and data platforms
  • Design and build federated distributed query engines and data services to enable real‑time analytics, dashboards, and ML consumers.
  • Lead the development of customer‑facing services that run on top of the platform (integration, data sharing, observability/analytics services), enabling cross‑service capabilities.
  • Deliver hands‑on technical leadership: prototype, prototype‑ validate, and implement solutions using modern development practices and tools, including AI‑assisted coding workflows.
  • Define organization‑wide architectures, methodologies, and roadmaps across multiple teams and products; communicate strategy and influence executive and product stakeholders.
  • Mentor and coach engineering teams, raise architectural and operational standards, and help select and develop future technical leaders.
  • Collaborate with product, customer engineering, and support teams to ensure reliability, performance, and great user experience for customer‑facing services.
  • Contribute to selection of technologies and frameworks, participate in design reviews, and guide cross‑organization implementation choices.
  • This opportunity is open to those who can demonstrate system level thinking and advanced AI-First coding.

Requirements:

  • Proficient with AI-First spec driven rapid innovation converting ideas to working prototypes using the AI coding tools.
  • Typically, 15+ years of experience in engineering and architectural leadership, designing, building, and operating large distributed systems and cloud platform services.
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related quantitative discipline preferred.
  • Strong foundations in large‑scale data engineering (OLAP, distributed storage systems, open data formats) and experience with federated datasets.
  • Experience designing and optimizing distributed query engines and low‑latency analytics systems.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud‑native architecture and microservices at scale across public cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure) and hybrid scenarios.
  • Hands‑on coding experience in system design and architecture phases; comfort using modern development and AI‑assisted tools.
  • Proven ability to create and communicate technical roadmaps and to influence cross‑functional and executive stakeholders.
  • Experience with Spark, Kafka, Parquet, Go, Java
  • Large analytics engines or managed analytics services (BigQuery or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience operating at senior technical leadership levels (Principal, Distinguished Engineer, or equivalent), with a history of cross‑organization technical impact.
  • Strategic thinker who can translate long‑term vision into executable technical roadmaps.
  • Strong communicator able to present complex technical concepts to executive and non‑technical audiences.
  • Comfortable taking broad ownership and driving projects that touch multiple teams and business units.
