Job description

Fleet Manager

Location: Nebraska

Employment Type: Full-time | Direct Hire

Heartland Staffing Solutions is proud to partner with a well-established, privately held construction and infrastructure company seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to lead its fleet, equipment, and maintenance operations.

This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for ensuring field teams have safe, reliable equipment where and when they need it, while providing company leadership with accurate visibility into fleet costs, utilization, maintenance performance, and future equipment needs.

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Fleet Manager will oversee fleet maintenance, preventative maintenance, equipment utilization, budgeting, asset lifecycle planning, equipment logistics, vendor relationships, shop operations, and facilities support.

This opportunity is ideal for a fleet professional who combines strong operational and mechanical knowledge with financial discipline, leadership ability, and data-driven decision making.

What You'll Lead

Fleet Operations & Asset Management

  • Lead the performance, reliability, utilization, and cost effectiveness of the company's vehicle and equipment fleet.
  • Maintain accurate visibility into equipment location, condition, utilization, maintenance history, and operating cost.
  • Ensure field teams have the equipment required to keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Analyze fleet performance and make recommendations regarding repair, replacement, redistribution, rental, purchase, and disposal.
  • Partner with executive and operational leadership on long-term fleet strategy and capital planning.

Maintenance & Equipment Reliability

  • Own the company's Preventative Maintenance Program for vehicles and equipment.
  • Establish maintenance schedules, inspection standards, service procedures, and performance expectations.
  • Ensure fleet assets remain safe, reliable, operational, and compliant.
  • Oversee repair authorization and accurate service histories for fleet assets.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce equipment downtime, improve reliability, and lower total maintenance costs.
  • Lead and develop maintenance personnel while creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Fleet Analytics & Cost Management

  • Develop reporting that gives leadership clear visibility into fleet costs, equipment utilization, downtime, reliability, and performance.
  • Track maintenance costs, fuel usage, rental expenditures, utilization, and lifecycle costs.
  • Build and manage the annual fleet maintenance and equipment replacement budget.
  • Identify budget variances early and provide leadership with actionable recommendations.
  • Evaluate total cost of ownership when recommending equipment purchases and replacements.
  • Ensure equipment utilization is accurately allocated to projects to support effective job costing.

Equipment Planning & Field Support

  • Partner closely with project managers and field operations to anticipate equipment requirements.
  • Coordinate equipment movement between projects and company facilities.
  • Maintain visibility into equipment availability across active projects.
  • Support equipment mobilization while minimizing downtime and project disruption.
  • Identify underutilized assets and recommend redistribution or other appropriate action.

Vendor & Rental Management

  • Manage relationships with equipment dealers, repair providers, rental companies, and other fleet vendors.
  • Negotiate pricing and service arrangements to improve cost and performance.
  • Monitor rental expenditures and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary rental costs.
  • Evaluate when equipment ownership provides a better long-term value than continued rental.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure fleet operations comply with applicable DOT, OSHA, fleet safety, and company requirements.
  • Partner with the Safety Department on fleet compliance and employee training.
  • Support CDL training initiatives and equipment inspection programs.
  • Maintain accurate fleet maintenance, inspection, and compliance records.

Shop & Facilities Leadership

  • Establish effective systems for receiving, stocking, labeling, tracking, and issuing maintenance and repair inventory.
  • Maintain strong inventory controls and conduct regular stock audits.
  • Ensure shop operations remain organized, safe, clean, and efficient.
  • Oversee facilities personnel and support the maintenance of safe, functional, and professional company facilities.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Fleet Manager will create measurable improvements in equipment uptime, reliability, utilization, cost control, and operational visibility.

Field teams will consistently have dependable equipment available to perform their work. Leadership will have accurate information to make repair, replacement, rental, and capital-purchase decisions. Maintenance and rental expenditures will be proactively managed, and fleet decisions will be supported by data rather than guesswork.

Most importantly, the Fleet Manager will build a disciplined fleet operation that supports both today's project demands and the company's long-term growth.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in fleet management, equipment management, vehicle maintenance, or a closely related operational environment; OR a bachelor's degree with relevant fleet maintenance experience.
  • 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle and equipment systems, preventative maintenance, and mechanical terminology.
  • Experience managing fleet maintenance programs and equipment reliability.
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and fleet safety compliance.
  • Experience managing budgets, maintenance costs, vendors, rentals, and operational priorities.
  • Ability to analyze fleet data and turn it into practical recommendations.
  • Strong organizational, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with field operations, project management, Safety, Accounting, vendors, and executive leadership.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • CDL preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 30 and First Aid/CPR certification preferred.

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone who sees fleet management as more than getting equipment repaired.

The ideal candidate thinks like both an operator and an asset manager. You'll understand what's happening in the shop and in the field, while also asking the bigger questions: Is equipment being fully utilized? What is downtime costing the organization? Is it better to repair or replace an asset? Should equipment be rented or purchased? Where can costs be reduced without sacrificing reliability?

You'll be comfortable working with maintenance personnel, coordinating with field leaders, negotiating with vendors, analyzing fleet performance, and presenting recommendations to senior leadership.

If you bring fleet expertise, operational leadership, financial awareness, accountability, and a continuous-improvement mindset, we'd like to hear from you.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Direct-hire leadership position reporting to the COO.
  • Opportunity to take ownership of a critical operational function.
  • Significant influence over fleet strategy, equipment reliability, and capital decisions.
  • Highly visible partnership with field operations and executive leadership.
  • Opportunity to improve systems, reporting, utilization, and cost controls.
  • Established organization with a strong presence in construction and infrastructure.
  • Long-term opportunity with a respected and growing company.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.

Heartland Staffing Solutions is proud to partner with a respected, privately held construction and infrastructure company. Company details will be shared with qualified candidates during the interview process.
