Job description
Executive Editor, US, Deloitte Insights
Deloitte Services LP is seeking an executive editor to join Deloitte Insights, Deloitte's publishing imprint for business research and insights. The executive editor will report to and partner with the global editor in chief to oversee content development, quality, and value.
Deloitte Insights is a resource to current and future business/organizational leaders across industries and geographies, offering them the data, analysis, and ideas they need to develop and implement their strategic agendas. We publish 400+ thought leadership pieces annually, from articles and research reports, to infographics, dashboards, and videos.
Our aim is to ensure that Deloitte Insights' thought leadership connects with what target audiences care about and need to know, and offers them new ideas, relevant data, and actionable insights. That said, the executive editor will need to know and stay up to speed on what's new and noteworthy to our target audiences, and be able to use audience insights to make data-driven story decisions. You'll be a champion for our audience, with a deep understanding of their content consumption behaviors and preferences. Working closely with subject matter specialists, researchers, data science and visualization professionals, designers, video strategists, and production specialists, you'll apply an outside-in lens to content planning, storytelling, and quality control, and deliver our content via a compelling, digital-first experience.
The executive editor is both a strategic leader and a hands-on editor who can coach others, sharpen ideas, improve storytelling, and help Deloitte authors and stakeholders communicate with clarity, rigor, and impact. You'll help shape and elevate the Deloitte Insights portfolio across digital formats, ensuring that individual pieces and integrated content packages work together to serve audience needs and business priorities.
You'll need to be a true-blue editor, with deep experience dissecting and reassembling stories to make them shine, someone who both excels at strategic storytelling and can apply AP style in their sleep-someone who knows the rules but also has the nuanced editorial skills to know how, when, and why to break them. In this role, you'll need to know when a draft is fine as is and when (and how) to attack a draft and distill it to its essence.
And you'll need to be an expert coach. The executive editor will be leading and collaborating with editors to help them improve their work-and also with subject matter experts (researchers and business partners) who may or may not be adept writers in their own right. This requires strong stakeholder management skills and influence to ensure that editors learn from you in each collaboration, and authors see the logic and value of your suggested edits.
The ideal candidate will have deep journalistic experience; a passion for accuracy, clarity, and compelling storytelling; and a demonstrated ability to communicate big ideas simply. This candidate will have experience working with senior business leaders and subject matter experts across a variety of business topics. The candidate should understand the dynamics of modern digital publishing and best practices for optimizing business content.
Our Deloitte Insights publishing team comprises editors plus design, data visualization, video, and production professionals located around the world. The executive editor will report to the editor in chief, based in the United States.
Recruiting for this role emds on 30 September 2026.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Owning content quality: Setting and managing quality standards for Deloitte's top-tier research and insights to ensure the insights' accuracy, clarity, appeal, and perceived value for target audiences
- Training, overseeing, and performance-managing editors on the implementation of those quality standards across all publishing projects; serving as the second set of eyes on Deloitte Insights content by working closely with editors, authors, and subject matter experts to ensure that thought leadership content (from short-form copywriting for the web to long-form research reports) meets Deloitte Insights' quality criteria
- Acting as a champion for the audience and a storytelling strategist to ensure that each content project is clear and compelling-that the story flows logically and ensures reader/viewer engagement from start to finish, the ideas are well-differentiated and communicated accurately and directly, the phrasing is dynamic and conversational, the overall content project will be perceived by professional, executive-level target audiences as high-quality and high-value, and the content will achieve the content creators' objectives
- Leading and developing editorial talent: Leading the continued development, training, and management of Deloitte Insights' copyediting function focused on ensuring research and insights projects' accuracy via fact-checking; data accuracy; precision of phrasing; sourcing and substantiation; copy optimization; terminology accuracy, consistency, and appropriateness; and grammar, punctuation, copy cleanliness, and AP style
- Managing editorial team members in collaboration with the editor in chief and the managing editor; guiding editors on how best to collaborate with authors as trusted advisors, helping them sharpen ideas, frame arguments, and make stronger content and format decisions
- Leading continuous process improvement for editorial systems and workflows to improve team collaboration and the quality and efficiency of the work, including identifying and testing new ways of working, and determining appropriate ways to integrate new tech/AI solutions for efficiency and quality assurance
- Championing responsible AI use: Promoting and modeling responsible use of AI, ensuring that humans lead original thought creation, analysis, writing, editing, fact-checking, and final publication decisions in line with firm policies
- Advising authors and stakeholders: Coaching Deloitte content creators on language usage, writing style, and storytelling effectiveness
- Leading special publishing programs and projects, such as the editorial agenda and quality standards for the Deloitte Insights video program
- Staying up to speed on storytelling trends, audience engagement best practices, and multichannel publishing innovations to help Deloitte Insights continuously improve
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in business journalism editing or business insights/thought leadership editing within an organization/association
- Bachelor's degree (preferably in English literature, journalism, communications, or similar)
- Exceptional editing skills, a mastery of both conversational phrasing and AP style, and the ability to explain/"sell" edits to authors in a collegial way
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills; proven ability to translate complex concepts into easily digestible terms; proven ability to communicate sophisticated insights to expert professional audiences of executives
- Excellent attention to detail, laser focus on quality, and ability to consider the big picture
- Outside-in orientation, considering all content projects from the perspective of the target audience and their needs/interests
- Versatile writing, editing, and storytelling skills, from writing engaging short-form web copy and video scripts to developmentally editing long-form research reports on complex topics
- Extensive team leadership experience and excellent performance management skills
- Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, including the confidence to interact with and influence personnel at all levels, as well as listening skills, responsiveness, flexibility, initiative, decision-making, conflict resolution, and tact
- Ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders, explaining editorial recommendations clearly, persuasively, and diplomatically to authors, editors, business leaders, and senior executives
- Experience creating multimedia content, including contributing storytelling guidance and quality oversight to video post-production projects
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, content management systems, and workflow and collaboration tools such as Workfront, Microsoft Teams, etc.; knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint
- Project management and leadership experience: Ability to manage multiple projects with quick turnaround times simultaneously
- Ability to work independently, as well as with a larger, multifunctional team
- Ability to travel 0-15%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
Preferred:
- Experience with corporate thought leadership and global, cross-industry content
- Experience working remotely with a global team
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $144,300 to $296,100.
You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
