Executive Design Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive design engineer?

To thrive as an Executive Design Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, product design, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and substantial industry experience. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications like Six Sigma is commonly required. Outstanding problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in managing teams and driving innovative solutions. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality, market-ready designs that align with business objectives and client requirements.

What is an executive design engineer?

Executive Design Engineers are senior professionals responsible for leading the design and development of new products, systems, or components within an organization. They oversee technical teams, manage complex engineering projects, and ensure that designs meet both client requirements and regulatory standards. In addition to hands-on engineering work, they often contribute to strategic decision-making, budgeting, and collaboration with other departments. Their expertise helps drive innovation and maintain high-quality standards throughout the design process.

What is the difference between Executive Design Engineer vs Design Engineer?

AspectExecutive Design EngineerDesign Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, often with leadership experienceBachelor's or Master's in Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentLeads projects, oversees teams, interacts with managementDesigns products, collaborates with teams, focuses on technical tasks
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive sectors with leadership rolesCommon across engineering firms, product development, R&D

The Executive Design Engineer typically holds a leadership role, overseeing design projects and teams, requiring additional experience and often managerial skills. In contrast, a Design Engineer primarily focuses on technical design tasks. Both roles require strong engineering credentials, but the Executive Design Engineer combines technical expertise with project management and strategic responsibilities.

How does an executive design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Executive Design Engineers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between design, engineering, and management teams. They regularly facilitate communication between departments such as R&D, manufacturing, and marketing to ensure that technical specifications align with business objectives. This collaboration often involves leading design reviews, integrating feedback from multiple stakeholders, and resolving technical challenges to keep projects on schedule. Effective teamwork and leadership skills are essential, as these engineers frequently mentor junior staff and champion best practices throughout the product lifecycle.

Job description

about the position…

Our Engineering team is proof that the Power Design “work hard, play hard” motto delivers results. With complex design-build projects underway nationwide — including large-scale data centers, healthcare facilities, stadiums, and other high-profile commercial builds — our team leads the industry through innovative, coordinated, and value-driven engineering solutions.

As the Engineering Technical Director, you will serve as the senior technical expert for complex electrical systems across these project types. This role is responsible for setting the technical direction, ensuring engineering excellence, and providing deep subject matter expertise from concept through construction. You will work closely with executive leadership, project teams, and clients while mentoring engineers and elevating the technical quality of our work nationwide.

This role is ideal for a seasoned electrical engineering leader who thrives in technically demanding environments and wants to shape how large-scale projects are designed and delivered.

position details/responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical authority for electrical design on data centers, healthcare facilities, stadiums, and other large, complex projects.
  • Provide expert guidance during pursuit, preconstruction, design development, permitting, and construction phases.
  • Establish, refine, and uphold electrical engineering standards and best practices across applicable project types.
  • Lead technical decision-making for power distribution systems, emergency systems, grounding, coordination studies, and life safety systems.
  • Review and validate engineering documentation to ensure accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and problem resolution on complex technical challenges.
  • Partner with project executives and clients as the subject matter expert to support technical strategy and solution development.
  • Identify innovative approaches that improve efficiency, coordination, and system performance while maintaining design integrity.

here’s what we’re looking for…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 12+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience with extensive involvement in large-scale projects such as data centers, healthcare facilities, stadiums, or similarly complex builds.
  • Deep technical knowledge of electrical distribution systems, backup power systems, load analysis, and system coordination.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, IBC, IECC, NFPA, and life safety codes.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a senior technical lead or subject matter expert.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex engineering challenges at both strategic and detailed levels.
  • Experience with Revit.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to confidently interface with clients, consultants, and executive leadership.
  • Highly detail-oriented, quality-driven, and capable of leading within a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates and upholds Power Design’s core values: integrity, accountability, teamwork, innovation, and growth.
