Job SummaryThis role supports NJDOT's Bureau of Safety Improvement Programs (BSIP) with traffic safety and Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) work.
The position is a good fit for a traffic engineer, transportation planner, or safety analyst with several years of related experience. The work includes crash analysis, safety screening, project review, memo writing, and coordination with NJDOT staff and consultant teams.
Direct NJDOT or HSIP experience is helpful, but not required.Responsibilities & QualificationsKey Responsibilities
  • Review crash data for corridors, intersections, ramps, and spot locations.
  • Prepare crash analysis memos, safety summaries, project review comments, and Problem Statement support materials.
  • Support safety screening for candidate projects, including High Injury Network and other data-driven screening methods.
  • Review project materials for crash patterns, pedestrian/bicycle needs, Safe System considerations, and potential countermeasures.
  • Prepare tables, charts, maps, crash summaries, and other supporting visuals.
  • Coordinate with NJDOT staff, project managers, crash records staff, and consultant teams.
  • Support quick-turnaround safety reviews for public, municipal, legislative, or executive-level safety concerns.
  • Assist with QA/QC of data, memos, comments, and deliverables.
Useful Skills
  • Traffic safety or transportation planning experience
  • Crash data review and pattern identification
  • Strong technical writing
  • Excel skills, including tables, formulas, charts, and basic data cleanup
  • Basic mapping or GIS experience
  • Interest in Safe System, Complete Streets, pedestrian/bicycle safety, or multimodal safety
  • Ability to learn agency-specific tools and procedures
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, urban planning, or a related field.
  • 3-7 years of traffic engineering, transportation planning, roadway safety, or related experience.
  • Strong writing, organization, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with data, maps, spreadsheets, and technical documents.
  • Able to manage multiple assignments in a client or agency environment.
Preferred but Not Required
  • EIT, PE, PTOE, RSP1, RSP2I, AICP, or similar credential.
  • Experience with DOT, county, MPO, or consultant transportation work.
  • Experience with crash analysis, HSIP, Safe System, Complete Streets, Vision Zero, or pedestrian/bicycle safety.

TYLin is committed to pay equity. As part of that commitment, we have provided the base compensation range of $81,200 - $121,800 annually for this position and local market.
