Comparison Search IntentUnderstanding executive pay structures, incentives, and benefitsAnalyzing salary data, compensation trends, and benchmarking

Executive Compensation focuses on designing and managing pay packages for top executives, including bonuses, stock options, and incentives. Compensation Analysts analyze salary data, develop compensation strategies, and ensure pay equity across roles. While both roles involve compensation, Executive Compensation is strategic and senior-level, whereas Compensation Analysts support data-driven decision-making at various organizational levels.

What is executive compensation?

Executive compensation refers to the total package of pay and benefits provided to senior leaders and top executives of an organization. This can include base salary, bonuses, stock options, long-term incentive plans, and various perks such as retirement contributions or health benefits. The goal of executive compensation is to attract, motivate, and retain talented leaders while aligning their interests with those of the company and its shareholders. The structure and amount of executive compensation are often determined by a company's board of directors and may be influenced by industry standards, company performance, and regulatory guidelines.

What are the disadvantages of executive compensation?

Executive compensation can lead to increased costs for companies and may create perceptions of unfairness or inequality among employees. It can also incentivize short-term decision-making at the expense of long-term company health, potentially impacting overall organizational performance.

How does an executive compensation professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Executive Compensation professionals regularly work cross-functionally, partnering closely with human resources, finance, legal, and the board of directors. They gather market data, ensure regulatory compliance, and align executive pay structures with company strategy. Collaboration often involves discussing performance metrics with finance, reviewing compliance with legal, and presenting proposals to the board or compensation committees. This collaborative approach ensures that executive compensation programs are both competitive and aligned with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive compensation professional?

To thrive as an Executive Compensation professional, you need expertise in compensation strategy, financial analysis, and knowledge of regulatory requirements, often supported by a degree in finance, human resources, or business administration. Familiarity with compensation management systems, advanced Excel skills, and certifications such as Certified Executive Compensation Professional (CECP) are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart in this field. These skills are crucial to ensure competitive, compliant, and motivating executive pay structures that align with organizational goals and stakeholder interests.

Job description

Lumen is the trusted network for the AIpowered world, connecting people, data, and applications through our expansive fiber network and connected ecosystem. We enable secure, highperformance connectivity across cloud, edge, and AI workloads for enterprises, governments, and communities.

At Lumen, you'll work on infrastructure customers rely on today and build for what's next, where performance, security, and resilience matter.

This is a high accountability environment where bold ideas drive real innovation for our customers, partners, and industry. The work is challenging, expectations are clear, and trust is built into how we operate. If you're ready to take ownership, deliver meaningful impact, and help shape the future of AIready connectivity, join us today.

The Role

Own the numbers behind Lumen's next chapter of growth.

Lumen Digital is where our future is being built - a fast-moving, consumption-based business reshaping how the world connects. We're looking for a Senior Manager of Finance to be the analytical engine behind that growth. This is not a back-office reporting job. You'll sit at the center of the action, turning strategy, pricing, and customer usage into the financial story that guides executive decisions and shapes where we invest next.

You'll build the models, call the plays, and connect every dollar to momentum. If you thrive on pace, love turning ambiguity into clarity, and want your work to visibly move the business - this is your seat.

Work Location

Fully remote position open to candidates based anywhere in the U.S.

The Main Responsibilities
Where You'll Make an Impact
Five ways this role helps move Lumen Digital forward.
Build the Financial Engine
MODELING & DIGITAL ECONOMICS
  • Own driver-based models that connect product strategy, pricing, usage, revenue, margin, and growth.
  • Run scenarios that de-risk major bets and surface new opportunities.
  • Build business cases that link investment to growth, margin, and payback.
Drive the Plan
FORECASTING, BUDGETING & PLANNING
  • Lead the forecasting and budgeting rhythm that keeps a fast-moving business on course.
  • Tie pipeline, installs, usage, retention, and pricing to financial outcomes.
  • Partner with leaders to ground plans in what is truly driving the business.
Find the 'Why'
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT & VARIANCE ANALYSIS
  • Analyze forecast-vs-actual results to uncover the real drivers behind the numbers.
  • Identify risks and opportunities early and recommend action.
  • Improve processes, reporting, and controls so the business can move quickly and confidently.
Define What Winning Looks Like
KPIS & REPORTING
  • Define KPIs that show leadership whether the business is winning.
  • Build dashboards that turn data into decisions and highlight leading indicators.
  • Ensure trusted definitions, sources, and reporting integrity.
Be the Trusted Voice
BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP & DECISION SUPPORT
  • Partner with Product, Sales, Customer Success, Corporate Finance, and Strategic Network Planning.
  • Serve as the financial voice in strategic and operational decisions.
  • Translate complexity into executive-ready stories that drive action.
What We Look For in a Candidate
Who You Are

  • 7+ years turning financial analysis into real business impact.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (MBA a plus).
  • Experience in digital, SaaS, or consumption-based businesses - you get how modern, usage-based growth works.
  • A modeling powerhouse: advanced Excel, with bonus points for Python, R, or other analytics tools.
  • Sharp, curious, and detail-obsessed - you find the signal in the noise.
  • A natural communicator who can hold the room with senior leaders.
  • Built for pace: you juggle competing priorities, thrive in ambiguity, and keep moving.

How You Work

  • You take ownership like an owner - accountable end to end.
  • You're proactive and results-driven; you don't wait to be told.
  • You build partnerships that make the whole team better.
  • You bring rigor, accuracy, and transparency to everything you touch.
