Job Title: Medically Fragile One-on-One RN
Supervisor: Executive Director of Special Education
Director/Coordinator of Health & Safety Services
Terms of Employment: 190 days
Job Summary:
The 1:1 Nurse working under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) in the school and functions as a member of the team and provides specialized 1:1 health-related services and appropriate care for chronically ill, medically fragile, and injured students as assigned or delegated, in accordance with laws governing nursing in South Carolina and with the mission statement and policies of the school district. The 1:1 nurse may require specialized training by the school nurse in accordance with written specialized health care procedures and health services protocols.
Essential Duties
  1. Reinforces the health promoting behaviors of individual students and staff using health program protocols and approved educational materials.
  2. Performs specific procedures and treatments with physician orders under the supervision of the registered school nurse to include, but not limited to, catheterization, suctioning, tracheotomy care, and tube feedings.
  3. Provides nursing care procedures as defined in the Individual Health Care Plan (IHP) or as assigned or delegated by RN.
  4. Assists the school nurse, school, and parents in maintaining the medically fragile student while in school.
  5. Administers first aid, medications, treatments and diet as authorized and prescribed by a licensed physician or other health care provider, in accordance with the nurse Practice Act and as stipulated by the supervising registered school nurse.
  6. Maintains accurate documentation, records, and confidentiality of information in accordance with school district standards.
  7. Reports information and concerns to registered school nurse.

Job Specifications
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required)
  1. Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina.
  2. Minimum of 3 years nursing experience, preferably in school nursing, public health nursing, emergency room, or pediatrics.
  3. Current certification in CPR.
  4. Current driver's license.
  5. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and at least two (2) years of experience preferably in school nursing, public health nursing, emergency room, or pediatrics.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms; walk; sit; stoop or kneel; crouch or crawl.
Additional physical requirements include the following:
  • Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds;
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus;
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
  • Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; and
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.
