Job description

Position Overview

The Baggage Handling System (BHS) Jammer is a critical frontline role responsible for maintaining the continuous flow of baggage through the airport's conveyor system. This position focuses on identifying, clearing, and preventing jams within the baggage handling system to ensure airline operations remain safe, efficient, and on schedule.

In addition to physically clearing jams, the Jammer is responsible for observing system conditions, identifying abnormalities, and reporting issues to supervisors, mechanics, or the control room for follow-up and corrective action.

This is a hands-on, safety-sensitive role in a fast-paced airport environment where attention to detail, situational awareness, and communication are essential.

Full Time, shift based (AM/PM/Overnight based on operational need)

Key Responsibilities

Baggage Handling & Jam Resolution

  • Monitor baggage handling conveyor systems for jams, obstructions, or abnormal operation
  • Safely and efficiently clear baggage jams to restore system flow
  • Respond promptly to dispatches from the control room or supervisors
  • Ensure cleared areas are safe before restarting system flow

Issue Identification & Reporting

  • Observe and report recurring jams, damaged bags, misaligned belts, faulty sensors, or other system irregularities
  • Communicate findings clearly to supervisors, mechanics, or control room staff
  • Assist in identifying trends or repeat problem areas within the system

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety procedures and lockout/tagout requirements when applicable
  • Maintain awareness of moving equipment, pinch points, and live conveyor systems
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or near-miss incidents
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times

Documentation & Communication

  • Accurately report cleared jams and observed issues as required
  • Provide clear handoffs between shifts regarding system conditions or unresolved concerns
  • Support accurate tracking of operational issues to assist maintenance teams

Team Support

  • Work closely with control room operators, mechanics, and supervisors
  • Assist with light housekeeping around conveyor areas to reduce jam risks
  • Support overall system reliability through vigilance and proactive communication

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a physically active role (standing, walking, bending, lifting)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow procedures and safety instructions precisely
  • Clear verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with conveyor systems, baggage handling systems, or industrial equipment
  • Airport, airline, warehouse, or logistics experience
  • Familiarity with safety-sensitive or regulated work environments
