What is an executive assistant fire chief?

Executive Assistant Fire Chiefs are high-ranking officials within a fire department who assist the Fire Chief in managing the department's operations, administration, and strategic initiatives. They often oversee various divisions such as emergency response, personnel, training, and budget management. These professionals serve as liaisons between the Fire Chief, department staff, and external agencies. Their role requires strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills to ensure that the department functions efficiently and meets community safety goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive assistant fire chief?

An Executive Assistant Fire Chief requires extensive experience in fire service operations, leadership, and emergency management, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in fire science, public administration, or a related field. Familiarity with incident command systems (ICS), emergency response software, and relevant certifications such as Fire Officer or EMT are commonly expected. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and organizational skills help build strong teams and foster effective community relations. These competencies ensure efficient department leadership, strategic planning, and effective response to emergencies.

What are the main challenges an executive assistant fire chief might face when managing both administrative duties and emergency response responsibilities?

An Executive Assistant Fire Chief often balances complex administrative tasks—such as budgeting, policy development, and staff management—with the unpredictable demands of emergency response. One of the main challenges is shifting quickly between strategic planning and high-pressure, real-time decision-making during incidents. Additionally, coordinating across multiple departments and maintaining clear communication can be demanding, especially when leading teams during critical situations. Successful candidates should be adaptable, organized, and skilled at prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.

The Elizabeth Fire Protection District is seeking a Fire Chief to lead this full-service combination fire and emergency services organization serving the Town of Elizabeth and surrounding rural communities in western Elbert County, Colorado. Located about 45 miles southeast of Denver at an elevation of roughly 6,500 feet, the District serves a distinctly rural region that remains within commuting distance of major employment centers in Parker, Castle Rock, and the Denver metropolitan area.
ELIZABETH FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

The Elizabeth Fire Protection District (EFPD) serves a population of approximately 15,000 residents across roughly 111 square miles, with continued residential growth projected in the coming years. The District operates from 3 stations and responds to approximately 1,600 calls a year with 24 full-time career line personnel, 18 part-time line personnel, 23 reserve members, and 7 administrative employees.

EFPD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors and operates with a 2026 general fund of approximately $6 million. The District protects a growing service area that includes commercial, agricultural, and industrial occupancies, with fire risk shaped by a varied wildland environment. Residents place a high value on community connection and local tradition, hosting large events throughout the year.
WHY APPLY

The next Fire Chief of the Elizabeth Fire Protection District will have the opportunity to lead a highly respected, community-focused organization experiencing significant growth within one of Colorado's fastest-growing regions. The District is known for its strong organizational culture, committed personnel, supportive Board, and outstanding reputation for customer service. Leading a combination fire department serving an expanding community, the next Chief will inherit a solid operational foundation while guiding continued growth, strengthening EMS and organizational development, investing in future leaders, and positioning the District for long-term success.
