Job description

Position Summary

The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and documentation of motorhome systems and components, from concept through production release. This role owns engineering drawings, 3D models, and bills of material for new and revised designs, and works closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Service to ensure designs are manufacturable, compliant, and reliable. The Design Engineer drives design improvements based on field performance, warranty trends, and production feedback, and serves as the technical authority on assigned systems throughout the product lifecycle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design new components, assemblies, and systems using 3D CAD (Creo) in accordance with engineering standards and RVIA requirements
  • Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings, models, and bills of material (BOM) for production use
  • Generate and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and Change Notices, ensuring proper revision control and documentation
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles to reduce production cost, installation time, and rework
  • Develop and evaluate prototypes; conduct design verification and validation testing
  • Perform root cause analysis on field returns, warranty claims, and production quality issues, and implement corrective design actions
  • Collaborate with Production and Service technicians to resolve build and installation issues tied to design intent
  • Support supplier selection and evaluation for new components, including reviewing supplier drawings and specifications
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable RVIA, DOT, FMVSS, and other regulatory standards
  • Maintain and organize engineering documentation, drawing archives, and CAD data
  • Partner with Purchasing on part sourcing, cost targets, and lead-time considerations during design
  • Other duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent combination of education and experience considered
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical or electromechanical design, preferably in RV, automotive, or heavy-vehicle manufacturing
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software; Creo experience strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5)
  • Solid understanding of electrical, mechanical, and structural systems as applied to motorhome design
  • Experience with bill of materials (BOM) structuring and revision/change control processes
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications
  • Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Effective cross-functional communication with Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Service teams
Other Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with RVIA and FMVSS standards for motorhome/RV construction
  • Experience with PLM or document control systems
  • Knowledge of composite, fiberglass, or aluminum body construction methods
  • Exposure to FEA or other simulation/analysis tools
  • Project management and prototype build coordination experience
  • Critical Thinking
  • Professional Communication
  • Self-Motivated
  • Time Management
  • Teamwork
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions. This role primarily takes place in an office and engineering environment, requiring extended periods of sitting at a computer workstation. Employees should expect to periodically stand, walk, and move throughout production areas to review builds, gather field data, and support technicians, including occasional bending, reaching, and handling of components or prototypes. Frequent use of eye/hand coordination is required for CAD work and technical documentation.
