Job description

Job Description
A Senior Engineer is a key member of the Nordstrom Technology organization, applying engineering principles to design, build, and maintain technology products and solutions that drive amazing customer and employee experiences. As a Senior Engineer on the Productivity and Collaboration team, you will own the architecture, administration, and automation of Nordstrom's Microsoft 365 and Azure platforms, with an emphasis on Exchange Online messaging infrastructure.
You will act as a subject matter expert and technical leader across the Microsoft 365 suite, including Exchange, Teams, and SharePoint/OneDrive, along with the underlying Azure identity and infrastructure that supports them. You bring deep hands-on expertise administering Exchange Online/Server and hybrid mail flow, strong command of Azure AD/Entra ID and Azure automation, and the scripting skills to build automation that scales rather than one-off fixes.
This role is offered as hybrid in Seattle, WA. Candidates must be available to work in office at the Nordstrom corporate headquarters a minimum of 4 days/week to be considered for this position.
A Day in the Life...
Automation & Tooling
  • Write PowerShell scripts and Microsoft Graph API automation for mailbox operations, tenant configuration, and reporting at scale
  • Build and maintain automation pipelines using Azure Automation Runbooks, Power Automate, and Azure Logic Apps to reduce manual, repetitive operational tasks
  • Maintain automation code in source control (GitHub), apply code review practices, and document libraries for team reuse

Microsoft 365 Platform Administration
  • Implement and support Microsoft 365 workloads including Teams and SharePoint/OneDrive, alongside Exchange
  • Administer O365 licensing (SKU assignment, Volume Licensing, Enterprise Agreements) and manage the full suite of Microsoft Admin Centers
  • Configure and maintain O365 security and compliance features, including DLP and retention policies

Exchange & Mail Flow Engineering
  • Architect, design, implement, and operate Exchange Online and hybrid Exchange environments, including mail flow, transport rules, connectors, and message routing across on-premises and cloud
  • Administer Exchange Online Protection (EOP) policies, anti-spam and anti-malware controls, and mail flow security baselines
  • Own DNS-based email authentication posture (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and SMTP fundamentals, driving alignment and enforcement across all sending domains
  • Perform message tracing and mail flow troubleshooting for complex, multi-hop delivery issues, engaging Microsoft support when needed

Azure Infrastructure & Identity
  • Manage Azure subscriptions, Azure Automation accounts, and Azure admin roles supporting messaging and collaboration workloads
  • Administer Active Directory and Azure AD/Entra ID synchronization, hybrid identity, and Conditional Access policies as they relate to Exchange and M365 access
  • Partner with Security on identity governance (e.g., Proofpoint), app registration review, and least-privilege access to mail-connected applications
  • Apply knowledge of load balancers, certificates, and authentication protocols to keep hybrid messaging infrastructure healthy and secure

Security, Compliance & Operations
  • Participate in compliance and security reviews for Exchange, M365, and Azure-hosted messaging services
  • Work closely with internal teams to build security, reliability, and scalability into the M365/Azure architecture
  • Provide operational support and monitoring using platforms such as New Relic
  • Engage in an on-call rotation to support critical messaging and collaboration services

Technical Leadership & Collaboration
  • Serve as the team's subject matter expert for Exchange, Microsoft 365, and Azure identity/infrastructure
  • Coordinate with partner technology teams and business units across Nordstrom to solve complex integrations and unlock new messaging, identity, and collaboration capabilities across Nordstrom
  • Partner with the team's manager and program manager to define and execute team vision and roadmaps
  • Write and contribute to project plans, runbooks, and team documentation
  • Provide mentorship and technical coaching to team members on Exchange, M365, and Azure engineering best practices

You Own This If You Have...
  • 5+ years of experience managing Microsoft 365 services, with deep, hands-on expertise in Exchange Online and hybrid Exchange
  • Expert experience with Exchange Online/Server administration, including mail flow, transport rules, EOP, and hybrid coexistence
  • Experience administering other Microsoft 365 workloads, including Teams and SharePoint/OneDrive
  • Experience with Azure subscriptions, Azure Automation accounts, and Azure admin roles
  • Experience managing Active Directory and Azure AD/Entra ID synchronization
  • Experience with O365 security and compliance features, including DLP and retention policies
  • Proficiency writing PowerShell scripts and working with Microsoft Graph for messaging and tenant automation
  • Working knowledge of SMTP, DMARC, DKIM, SPF, and DNS
  • Understanding of load balancers, certificates, and authentication as they apply to hybrid messaging infrastructure

Nice to have...
  • Experience managing Microsoft Volume Licenses, Enterprise Agreements, and Reservations
  • Experience with a secure email gateway (e.g., Proofpoint) for phishing and threat protection as a complement to Exchange/EOP
  • Experience with hybrid cloud infrastructure (Azure/AWS)
  • Exposure to ITSM platforms (ServiceNow, Jira) for change management and incident workflows
