Exception Processor information

What is an exception processor?

Exception Processors are professionals who handle and resolve discrepancies or errorsβ€”known as 'exceptions'β€”that occur during business processes, such as financial transactions, data entry, or document processing. Their main role is to investigate the cause of exceptions, correct errors, and ensure that transactions are completed accurately. They often work with various departments to identify issues, implement solutions, and improve workflow efficiency. This position requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and familiarity with relevant software systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an exception processor?

To thrive as an Exception Processor, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with financial or transactional processes, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency with data entry systems, workflow management software, and banking or payment processing platforms is typically required. Effective problem-solving, time management, and clear communication set exceptional performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately identifying and resolving transaction discrepancies, ensuring operational efficiency, and minimizing financial risk.

What are some common challenges exception processors face, and how can they be addressed?

Exception Processors often encounter challenges such as high volumes of transactions with discrepancies, tight deadlines, and the need for precise attention to detail. Managing multiple exceptions simultaneously while ensuring accuracy can be demanding, especially during peak periods. Staying organized, using workflow management tools, and maintaining clear communication with team members and other departments are effective strategies to overcome these challenges. Regular training and staying updated on company policies also help Exception Processors handle exceptions efficiently and reduce errors.

Director, Indirect Tax

Overview:

Blue Yonder is seeking a Director of Global Indirect Taxes to lead and scale the Company's global indirect tax operating model. Reporting to the VP of Tax, this role will serve as the global owner for indirect tax operations, including U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST, VAT/GST coordination, e-invoicing, digital reporting, indirect tax reconciliations, tax engine governance, and related compliance processes.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can operate independently at a Director level while also rolling up their sleeves to solve issues, improve processes, manage vendors, and drive execution. The Director will partner closely with Tax leadership, Tax Technology, Finance, IT, Revenue, Billing, Procurement, local tax teams, and external providers to ensure Blue Yonder's indirect tax processes are compliant, scalable, controlled, and ready for evolving global digital tax mandates.

Current Technical and Operating Environment:

  • Avalara AvaTax for tax determination

  • Avalara ECM, ELR, e-invoicing, and additional modules as needed

  • EY/Anybill partnership for U.S. sales tax compliance support

  • Workday as the ERP source system, including Workday connector considerations

  • Billing, revenue, procurement, and related finance systems that interact with indirect tax processes

  • Global e-invoicing and digital reporting environment evolving as mandates come online

  • Power BI, Alteryx, or similar tools used or available for reporting, reconciliation, analytics, and process improvement

What You'll Do:

  • Lead global indirect tax operations
  • Own Blue Yonder's global indirect tax operating model, including U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST, VAT/GST coordination, e-invoicing, digital reporting, reconciliations, controls, and compliance governance.
  • Manage U.S. sales tax compliance and reporting
  • Own U.S. sales tax reporting and compliance coordination through the EY/Anybill outsource model, including compliance calendars, data submission, return support, return review, monthly reconciliations, exception management, issue resolution, and vendor performance.
  • Strengthen monthly reconciliations and exception processes
  • Enhance monthly sales and use tax reconciliation processes, establish clear exception reporting, improve business intelligence reporting, and ensure issues are tracked, resolved, and escalated appropriately.
  • Own Canada GST and Global VAT/GST coordination
  • Coordinate with Blue Yonder local tax teams and external providers to ensure VAT/GST compliance is managed effectively across jurisdictions, with clear ownership, documentation, controls, and escalation paths.
  • Lead global e-invoicing and digital reporting for Tax
  • Serve as the Tax owner for global e-invoicing and digital reporting requirements as mandates come online. Partner with Tax Technology, Finance, IT, local tax teams, and external advisors to define requirements, support execution, and eventually own the Avalara ELR platform from a Tax perspective.
  • Govern Avalara and related indirect tax platforms
  • Own Avalara governance and issue remediation, including hands-on involvement with AvaTax, ECM, ELR, e-invoicing, and additional modules as needed. Ensure configuration, taxability decisions, exemption processes, data flows, and issue resolution are managed in a controlled and sustainable way.
  • Own indirect tax requirements for integrations and business initiatives
  • Own indirect tax requirements and operating impacts for integrations and business initiatives involving Workday, Avalara, TechLiquidators, Chargebee, Stripe, LMS/Pledge, and other relevant systems or commercial channels.
  • Drive process improvements and controls
  • Identify opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, reconciliations, reporting, documentation, controls, and automation. Partner closely with the Senior Director, Tax Technology and broader Finance/IT teams to execute improvements, while remaining hands-on where needed.
  • Support audit readiness and control evidence
  • Build and maintain scalable documentation, controls, stakeholder cadence, and evidence trails to support audits, internal controls, compliance reviews, and leadership reporting.

What We're Looking For:

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • 10+ years of indirect tax experience

  • Strong U.S. sales and use tax experience, including multi-state sales tax compliance, reporting, taxability, reconciliations, and audit support

  • Global VAT/GST experience, including coordination with local tax teams, advisors, or compliance providers

  • Experience with e-invoicing, digital reporting, or global indirect tax mandates

  • Hands-on Avalara experience, including AvaTax or comparable tax engine experience

  • Experience managing outsourced compliance providers or similar operating models

  • Experience owning compliance calendars, data submissions, output reviews, GL reconciliations, issue resolution, and vendor service quality

  • Strong understanding of ERP, billing, revenue, and tax system data flows, including Workday or comparable ERP environments

  • Ability to own indirect tax requirements for system integrations and business initiatives

  • Strong process improvement, documentation, controls, and stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to operate independently at a Director level while also being willing to perform hands-on execution work where needed

  • Ability to support a global role, including collaboration across EMEA and India time zones

Preferred Experience

  • Master's degree, CPA, JD, or LLM preferred

  • CPA preferred

  • Big 4 experience a plus

  • SaaS, software, cloud, or technology company experience preferred

  • Experience with Avalara ECM, ELR, e-invoicing, or additional indirect tax modules preferred

  • Experience with Workday connectors or ERP-to-tax engine integrations preferred

  • Experience with Power BI, Alteryx, data analytics, or automation tools preferred

  • Experience building business intelligence reporting for indirect tax processes preferred

Ways of Working:

The successful candidate will be a practical, hands-on indirect tax leader who can balance technical tax judgment, operational execution, system governance, and cross-functional leadership. This person should be comfortable working across Tax, Finance, IT, Revenue, Billing, Procurement, local tax teams, and external providers, with the ability to translate indirect tax requirements into executable processes and sustainable controls.
