Excavating companies are businesses that provide excavation services, managing multiple projects and employing crews. Excavators are the heavy machinery used in these projects, operated by trained operators. While excavating companies hire excavators (the equipment), the term 'excavator' also refers to the machine itself. Understanding this distinction helps in searching for the right service or equipment for your construction needs.

What are excavating companies?

Excavating companies are specialized contractors that provide earthmoving and site preparation services for construction projects. Their work includes digging foundations, grading land, trenching, and removing soil or debris to make way for new structures such as buildings, roads, or utilities. They operate heavy machinery like excavators, bulldozers, and backhoes to carry out these tasks efficiently and safely. Excavating companies play a crucial role in the early stages of construction, ensuring the site is properly prepared according to project specifications and local regulations.

How to get a job in excavating companies?

To get a job in excavating companies, candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, relevant experience or training in operating heavy machinery, and often obtain certifications such as OSHA safety training. Applying through company websites, staffing agencies, or job boards, and demonstrating physical fitness and safety awareness, can improve chances of employment in this field.

What are some typical challenges excavating companies face on job sites and how do employees help address them?

Excavating company employees often encounter challenges such as unexpected underground utilities, varying soil conditions, and tight project timelines. Team members collaborate closely with project managers, surveyors, and utility locators to adapt plans in real time, ensuring safety and efficiency. Proactive communication and flexibility are key to addressing these challenges, while adherence to safety protocols and regular equipment inspections help minimize risks. This collaborative, problem-solving approach is central to the day-to-day responsibilities in an excavating company.

We are seeking an experienced Lead Septic Repair & Excavation Technician to join our growing service division.

This is a working field position—not just an equipment operator. You will operate excavators and skid steers while also working alongside your crew performing physical labor, completing repairs, and ensuring every project is completed safely, efficiently, and professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Operate mini excavators, compact excavators, and skid steers
  • Drive company trucks and trailers to residential and commercial job sites
  • Locate and excavate buried cesspools, septic tanks, sewer lines, and utility connections
  • Install septic tank risers, collars, access covers, and distribution box risers
  • Replace main waste lines, sewer laterals, and underground piping
  • Perform septic system repairs and service excavations
  • Dig by hand around utilities, septic tanks, and structures when required
  • Lay and connect sewer pipe and fittings
  • Load and unload equipment, tools, and materials
  • Organize job materials, truck inventory, and yard stock
  • Work alongside and help lead a 2-3 person crew
  • Restore job sites by backfilling, grading, cleaning, and leaving properties in excellent condition
  • Communicate professionally with homeowners and commercial customers
  • Complete job notes, photos, and documentation using company iPads and ServiceTitan
  • Utilize GPS and mobile technology to navigate between job sites
  • Follow Safe Dig 811 requirements, OSHA regulations, and company safety standards
  • Maintain clean trucks, trailers, tools, and equipment

Qualifications

  • Valid CDL Class A or Class B License required
  • Clean driving record
  • Experience operating mini excavators, skid steers, and compact construction equipment
  • Experience in septic, sewer, excavation, underground utilities, plumbing, or sitework required
  • Willingness to perform physical labor—not just operate equipment
  • Ability to safely dig around underground utilities and existing infrastructure
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to use GPS, mobile applications, and CRM software on an iPad
  • ServiceTitan experience is a plus
  • Strong work ethic, leadership skills, and attention to detail
