What are Exam Readers?

Exam Readers are individuals who assist students with disabilities by reading exam questions and instructions aloud during tests. Their role is to ensure that students who have difficulty reading due to visual impairments, learning disabilities, or other conditions have equal access to exam content. Exam Readers do not provide hints or explanations; they simply read the material as written and may also record the student's answers if needed. This accommodation helps create a fair testing environment and supports educational accessibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Exam Reader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exam Reader, you need excellent reading comprehension, attention to detail, and a strong command of the language being assessed, typically supported by relevant academic qualifications. Familiarity with digital assessment platforms and secure online submission systems is often required. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and impartiality help ensure fairness and consistency in the evaluation process. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of exam results.

What are some common challenges faced by Exam Readers, and how can they be addressed?

Exam Readers often encounter challenges such as interpreting diverse handwriting styles, maintaining objectivity, and managing tight deadlines, especially during peak examination periods. To address these, it's helpful to develop effective time management strategies, stay updated on grading rubrics, and participate in calibration sessions to ensure consistency. Collaborating with other readers and exam coordinators can also provide support and help resolve ambiguities in student responses.

Job description

About the Role:
SiSTEM is hiring experienced ISEE and SSAT test prep tutors to work with motivated students and families in the Houston area.

This is not a volume tutoring gig. Our tutors work as trusted academic partners with families who value expertise, helping students master the content, develop strong test-taking strategies, and earn the scores they need to gain admission to top private and independent schools.
If you can tutor any of the following, we want to hear from you:
ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam)
ISEE Primary (Grades 2โ€“4 entry):

  • Test anxiety management and confidence building.
  • Score goal setting based on target school admission profiles.
  • ISEE vs. SSAT comparison and test selection guidance for families unsure which exam their target school requires.
Subject-Specific ISEE/SSAT Support:
  • Vocabulary building and synonym/analogy strategies for verbal sections.
  • Reading comprehension strategies for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry passages.
  • Math content review and problem-solving strategies for quantitative sections.
  • Essay writing coaching and prompt practice for the writing sample.
  • Quantitative comparison strategies (ISEE-specific).
  • Analogy strategies (SSAT-specific).

School-Specific Admissions Test Prep:

  • Understanding which schools require ISEE, which require SSAT, and which accept both.
  • Score benchmarking relative to target school competitiveness.

You do not need to tutor every level or every exam. If you specialize in ISEE Upper Level only, or SSAT Middle Level only, or just the math sections, or just the verbal sections, or anything in between, we want you on our team.
About SiSTEM:
SiSTEM is an academic guidance platform that builds personalized roadmaps for students in grades Kโ€“12. Every student on SiSTEM has a plan. Tutors are a key part of that plan and are matched to students based on specific needs, not random availability.

We started as a tutoring agency in Texas, grew to 300+ tutors serving 10,000+ students, and are now launching a platform that gives educators better tools, better-matched students, and the ability to build a real client base.

What You'll Do:
  • Work one-on-one with students to provide focused ISEE and/or SSAT preparation.
  • Diagnose strengths and weaknesses through practice tests and targeted assessments.
  • Build a personalized prep plan based on each student's starting score, target school, and test date.
  • Teach test-taking strategies, pacing, and score optimization across all sections.
  • Help students build confidence and reduce test anxiety through structured practice.
  • Coach students on the writing sample to produce clear, compelling essays under time pressure.
  • Track score progress and adjust strategy as students improve
  • Communicate with families on progress, projected scores, and admissions readiness.
  • Maintain high standards of preparation and professionalism.

What We're Looking For:

We are selective about who joins the SiSTEM team.

Strong candidates typically have:
3+ years of ISEE/SSAT tutoring or private school test prep experience
  • Proven results in helping students gain admission to their target private or independent schools.
  • Deep familiarity with current ISEE and/or SSAT formats, question types, scoring, and section-by-section strategies.
  • Experience working with motivated students and families who are targeting competitive private school admissions.
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to make test prep feel structured and manageable for young students who may be testing for the first time.
  • Professional reliability.

Bonus: tutors with experience at Houston-area private schools (as teachers, admissions staff, or alumni), tutors who have prepped students successfully for Kinkaid, St. John's, Emery/Weiner, or other competitive Houston-area schools, educators with experience working with younger students (grades 2โ€“6) on standardized test prep, tutors who can advise families on the private school application process beyond just the test.

Why Tutors Join SiSTEM:
  • You set your own rates. And you keep 100% of what you earn.
  • Matched with students who fit your expertise. No random assignments. Students are matched to you based on test type, level, learning needs, and your teaching strengths.
  • Bring your current students with you. Already have clients? Add them to the platform for free. Use SiSTEM's tools to manage your existing students alongside new ones at no extra cost.
  • Families are already invested. SiSTEM parents are paying for a plan. They're engaged, responsive, and serious about their child's growth.
  • We handle the marketing. You don't have to find clients. We bring families to you.
  • Tools to manage your business. Scheduling, session tracking, and student relationship tools built into the platform.
  • Build a long-term client base. Students on SiSTEM stay for years, not weeks.
