What is an evidence based design specialist?

Evidence Based Design Specialists are professionals who use research and data to inform the planning, design, and evaluation of physical environments, such as hospitals, schools, or workplaces. Their goal is to create spaces that improve outcomes for users by integrating the best available evidence into design decisions. They typically collaborate with architects, designers, and stakeholders to ensure that spaces are both functional and supportive of well-being. Evidence Based Design Specialists often work in healthcare settings but their expertise can be applied to various industries.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an evidence based design specialist?

To thrive as an Evidence Based Design Specialist, you need expertise in architecture or interior design, research methodologies, and a solid understanding of evidence-based practices, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like EDAC (Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification). Familiarity with data analysis tools, CAD software, and research databases is typically required. Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure that design decisions are informed by credible research, resulting in environments that optimize user outcomes and organizational goals.

An Evidence Based Design Specialist works closely with healthcare professionals such as nurses, physicians, and administrators to ensure that new facility designs support clinical workflows and patient outcomes. Collaboration often involves conducting interviews, focus groups, and observational studies to gather insights about user needs and challenges.
