Job Details:
SUMMARY:
The Commodity Buyer is responsible for originating, purchasing, and managing physical grain supplies to support Tyson Foods' feed ingredient requirements. This role develops and maintains relationships with farmers, grain elevators, and commercial grain suppliers while managing positions, contracts, and inventory to ensure an efficient and reliable grain supply chain.
Reporting to the Lead Grain Originator, the Commodity Buyer will execute grain merchandising strategies, secure spot and forward grain supplies, monitor market conditions, and support risk management activities through hedge execution and position management. The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills, a customer-focused mindset, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic commodity market environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Procure corn, soybeans, wheat, and other feed ingredients from farmers, grain elevators, and commercial suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with grain producers and industry stakeholders within the assigned trade territory.
  • Execute spot and forward grain purchases to support feed ingredient supply requirements.
  • Manage the purchase-to-pay process, ensuring accurate contract execution and timely producer payments.
  • Monitor local and regional grain markets, freight dynamics, and supply conditions to identify merchandising opportunities.
  • Maintain daily grain bids and communicate market information to producers and customers.
  • Execute hedge transactions and maintain accurate position reports in accordance with company risk management policies.
  • Manage grain inventory levels and assist in developing supply plans to meet business needs.
  • Coordinate grain shipments with commodity transportation and logistics teams.
  • Review market analysis, reports, and economic data to support procurement and hedging decisions.
  • Utilize internal merchandising, contract management, and position reporting systems.
  • Represent Tyson Foods at producer meetings, industry events, farm visits, and grower outreach activities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance grain procurement effectiveness and producer engagement.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Broad knowledge in a financial or agricultural field normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Finance, Agricultural Business, or a related field preferred.
Experience:
  • 1 plus years experience required in a grain merchandising, commodity procurement, grain origination, trading, or related experience or 5 years in a similar type of role in purchasing or trading preferred.
  • Candidates with equivalent experience in agricultural purchasing, grain operations, commodity risk management, or related commercial roles will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of grain merchandising fundamentals, basis markets, hedge management, and commodity pricing mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of grain origination practices and producer contracting strategies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with producers and customers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with grain merchandising, risk management, or contract systems is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across procurement, transportation, accounting, and operations teams.

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written skills; ability to speak publicly to farmers in presentations.
Special Skills: Knowledge of merchandising practices and flexible contract pricing methods; ability to address groups and give presentations; understand the needs of the farmers and have the ability to work with a wide variety of teams and customers.

Travel: Approximately 5-10% travel, including customer visits, producer meetings, and industry events.
