Events Intern
General Description
The Events Intern is a paid intern position at the Detroit Zoological Society. The Events Intern will work in the Events department and will assist the Event Managers, Supervisors, and Coordinator. Qualified and motivated candidates will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of public and private events. The candidate will rotate between the Private Events team and the Public Events team.
This internship will focus on hands-on experience and will be responsible for assisting the Events department in event planning and event execution. This will include developing event ideas, working with local vendors, customers and staff, creating event documentation and executing event timelines. The Events Intern will also have the opportunity to serve as the point of contact on designated event days.
This job description is by no means all-inclusive and may be subject to change during a performance period due to the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society and its leadership. This document will be reviewed on a continual basis and will be modified as needed.
This internship will run from late August 2026 to early January 2027. Exact start and end dates are flexible.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing event concepts and themes.
  • Assist with coordination and execution of event logistics (e.g. banquet event orders, talent, vendors, etc.)
  • Assist with event timeline details including timing for promotional materials, date logos need to be received from sponsors, date promotional materials will be displayed, dates event talent/activities need to be confirmed, etc.
  • Assist with set up and tear down of events.
  • Meet customers at the start of their event and serve as point of contact for any needs that may arise.
  • Participate in DZS activities, meetings and events as required.
  • All other responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Event Managers.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Must be a college student enrolled in a relevant degree program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Interest in actively learning about event planning and development.
  • Ability to multitask and use creativity to develop new event concepts.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Outgoing and friendly personality who enjoys working with people.
  • Work with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well as a team member or independently.

Working Conditions
Regular work schedule may include occasional evenings, weekends, early-mornings and holidays. The work environment is generally comfortable; some work is conducted indoors however the position does require work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. This internship will take place onsite at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, MI and is based on a 30-40 hour work week schedule. This internship will run from May-August of 2024.
Physical Requirements
This position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping for extended periods, the ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds and the use of standard office equipment and the computer.
