How much do event manager jobs pay per year?
What does an event manager do?
What is the difference between Event Manager vs Event Coordinator?
| Aspect | Event Manager | Event Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Responsibilities | Oversees entire event planning, manages budgets, coordinates teams, and ensures event success | Assists with planning, manages logistics, and handles on-site operations |
| Required Skills | Leadership, budgeting, vendor management, problem-solving | Organization, communication, multitasking, attention to detail |
| Work Environment | Office-based with site visits, often in event venues or client locations | Primarily on-site during events, with some planning meetings |
| Common Employers | Event planning companies, corporations, venues | Event planning firms, corporate event departments, nonprofits |
While both roles are essential in event planning, the Event Manager has broader responsibilities, including overseeing the entire event process and managing teams, whereas the Event Coordinator focuses more on logistics and on-site execution. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.
What are some common challenges faced by event managers when coordinating large-scale events, and how can these be effectively managed?
What does an event manager do?
Event managers plan, organize, and supervise events, such as business conferences, weddings, and festivals. They handle all the arrangements required to make the event run smoothly. Event managers determine what the client needs and expects; then they coordinate the preparations leading up to the event, including booking venues, scheduling transportation, and selecting the food and decorations. They may even need to hire staff for the event. Event managers may need to employ reliable waiters, entertaining DJs, and talented photographers. Event managers monitor payments and budget, and ensure the event meets all required safety regulations. Large-scale corporate gatherings require management, so the event manager often delegates and oversees planning tasks to focus on operating on-site the night of the occasion.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an event manager, and why are they important?

Gong is looking for a senior event marketing leader to own and evolve Gong\'s third-party event strategy. This role is responsible for building a best-in-class portfolio of industry conferences, sponsorships, programs, and activations that generate and accelerate pipeline, strengthen customer relationships, and elevate Gong\'s brand.
This is a strategic, high-visibility role that requires equal parts strategic planning, business acumen and operational excellence. You\'ll define where Gong invests, build scalable event strategies aligned to GTM priorities, influence senior stakeholders, negotiate high-value partnerships, and deliver flawless execution from planning through post-event measurement.
Success in this role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong executive influence, and an unwavering commitment to delivering world-class experiences that drive measurable business impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Own Gong\'s Third-Party Event Strategy
- Develop and lead Gong\'s global third-party event strategy, including industry conferences, sponsorships, programs, and activations.
- Evaluate opportunities through the lens of business impact, audience fit, pipeline generation, customer engagement, and brand value to determine where Gong should invest.
- Build and manage the annual third-party events roadmap, ensuring alignment with company priorities, sales objectives, and regional GTM plans.
- Continuously evaluate portfolio performance and identify opportunities to optimize, expand, or sunset programs based on business outcomes.
- Lead End-to-End Program Execution
- Own every aspect of event execution, including sponsorship negotiations, contract management, booth strategy and design, logistics, field enablement, executive preparation, content coordination, onsite management, and post-event follow-up.
- Establish and maintain exceptionally high standards of operational excellence, ensuring every event reflects Gong\'s brand and delivers a seamless experience for customers, prospects, partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Anticipate risks, proactively solve problems, and drive projects forward with minimal oversight.
- Influence Cross-Functional Teams
- Serve as a trusted strategic partner to Sales, Field Marketing, Demand Generation, Customer Success, Partnerships, Brand, and Executive Leadership.
- Align event investments with pipeline goals, account priorities, and business objectives while balancing stakeholder needs and budget considerations.
- Build strong relationships internally and externally to maximize the impact of every program.
- Measure & optimize:
- Define success metrics for every event and evaluate performance across pipeline, revenue influence, customer engagement, executive meetings, and brand impact.
- Present recommendations, insights, and portfolio performance to senior leadership, using data to inform future investment decisions.
- Continuously improve processes, reporting, and operational efficiency to scale Gong\'s third-party event program.
- Manage events & work streams across Strategic Events Portfolio:
- Play a key role in planning and executing Gongโs annual flagship conference, Celebrate, owning critical workstreams such as: registration strategy, sponsor management, ancillary programs, logistics, and more.
- Support and own proprietary event programs (roadshows, dinners, etc). Everyone on the events team owns & operates programs across the portfolio.
- 10+ years of experience leading B2B event marketing or field marketing programs, preferably within high-growth SaaS organizations.
- Demonstrated success owning and evolving a strategic event portfolio with measurable impact on pipeline, revenue, and customer engagement.
- Proven ability to think strategically while executing with precision and consistently delivering exceptional experiences.
- Strong executive presence with experience influencing senior leaders and building alignment across Sales, Marketing, Partnerships, and Executive stakeholders.
- Outstanding project management and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience evaluating investment decisions, managing significant event budgets, negotiating sponsorships, and measuring ROI.
- Highly proactive, resourceful, and comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- A continuous improvement mindset with a passion for raising the bar and building scalable, best-in-class event programs.
- Willingness to travel as needed to support key events (up to 35-40% in high seasons) throughout the year.
- We offer Gongsters a variety of medical, dental, and vision plans, designed to fit you and your familyโs needs.
- Wellbeing Fund - flexible wellness stipend to support a healthy lifestyle.
- Mental Health benefits with covered therapy and coaching.
- 401(k) program to help you invest in your future.
- Education & learning stipend for personal growth and development.
- Flexible vacation time to promote a healthy work-life blend.
- Paid parental leave to support you and your family.
- Company-wide recharge days each quarter.
- Work from home stipend to help you succeed in a remote environment.
The annual salary hiring range for this position is $138,000 - $210,000 USD.
Compensation is based on factors unique to each candidate, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, qualification, education, experience, and location. At Gong, we have a location-based compensation structure, which means there may be a different range for candidates in other locations. The total compensation package for this position, in addition to base compensation, may include incentive compensation, bonus, equity, and benefits. Some of our sales compensation programs also offer the potential to achieve above targeted earnings for those who exceed their sales targets.
We are always looking for outstanding Gongsters! So if this sounds like something that interests you regardless of compensation, please reach out. We may have more roles for you to consider and would love to connect.
We have noticed a rise in recruiting impersonations across the industry, where scammers attempt to access candidates\' personal and financial information through fake interviews and offers. All Gong recruiting email communications will always come from the @gong.io domain. Any outreach claiming to be from Gong via other sources should be ignored.
