Lifeguard: Delano Community Education
Under the direction of the Director of Community Education, Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all pool patrons by preventing, recognizing, and responding to aquatic emergencies. This position maintains a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for community members of all ages participating in open swims, lap swims, lessons, and special events.
Areas of Responsibility
1. Patron Safety & Surveillance
  • Maintain continuous, alert surveillance of the pool area and patrons.
  • Enforce all pool rules, regulations, and policies fairly and consistently.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies, providing appropriate care (CPR, First Aid, AED) as trained.

2. Facility Operations & Maintenance
  • Conduct daily opening and closing safety checks of the pool area and rescue equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean pool deck, locker rooms, and equipment storage areas.

3. Community Relations & Customer Service
  • Act as a positive, welcoming representative of Delano Community Education.
  • Interact professionally with patrons, parents, and school staff; answer questions and resolve minor concerns courteously.
  • Assist with setup and closing of pool events such as: swim lessons, aquacise, pool rentals, and more.

4. Administration & Professionalism
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and in-service training sessions to maintain rescue readiness.
  • Accurately complete incident reports, logbooks, and shift sheets in a timely manner.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding (or equivalent)
  • First Aid and CPR/AED

Experience & Skills
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to command respect from pool patrons.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive in high-stress emergency situations.

Physical & Environmental Demands
  • Physical Demands: Prolonged sitting or standing in an elevated guard chair; ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs; ability to swim distance and submerge to retrieve objects/persons from the deep end.
  • Environmental Conditions: High-humidity, loud acoustic environment typical of indoor public pools; exposure to pool chemicals (chlorine, acid) and warm temperatures.
