GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
ALC Security Assistant, under the leadership of the Director and guidance of the Office of Security and Emergency Management, is responsible for providing protective service work to maintain and enhance the security of students, staff and school property while adhering to established policies and procedures.
Essential Tasks:
  • Arrive on time and conduct surveillance of school, grounds, parking lots.
  • Be aware of evening or Saturday classes or events scheduled and be informed of those expected in the building.
  • Maintain a visual of the ALC entrance; greet all students, staff, and guests; screen, sign-in all visitors as required
  • Deter admittance of unauthorized persons to the premises and report any suspicious conditions or disturbances to administrator.
  • Assist with drills and emergency evacuations.
  • Assist administrators and evening registrars or Saturday staff when requested.
  • Confirm with administrator that students have left the building; assist with any needing assistance to their vehicle.
  • Inform school administration regarding concerns with process and procedures, equipment needs and operational activities.
  • Attend training meetings conducted by the Office of Security and Emergency Management
  • Serve as a member of the school Crisis Response Team and perform duties assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by administrator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must have general knowledge of the practices, procedures, and strategies regarding the protection of buildings and grounds to provide effective security operations.
  • Must have the ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency, and the ability to think and respond quickly, effectively, and responsibly during emergencies.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills to successfully interact with a diverse population, delivered with focused attentiveness during student entrance and exit times each day.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and/or explain various types of information in a clear and concise manner; interact and respond effectively to students, staff, and the community; and prepare and maintain accurate reports.
  • Must be skilled in the use and operation of security system in place, security software programs, and other emergency/security equipment.
  • Must possess experience in Microsoft Office Suite, Windows applications, Internet, and email
  • Ability to lift to 20 lbs. on occasion
  • Ability to complete all tasks in a timely and efficient manner, and handle a reasonable amount of stress

Education and Experience:
Required: High School diploma or GED
Preferred: Some experience in the field of law enforcement or security.
Special Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age to be eligible for the Virginia School Security Officer Certification
  • Must complete and maintain the following training and certifications:
    • Virginia School Security Officer Certification (recertification every two years required)
    • MANDT System Crisis-De-Escalation Training (recertification every two years required)
    • Annual Mandatory Employee Training (AMET) (completion annually)
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training (recertification every two years required)
    • Basic First-Aid Training (recertification every two years required)

Important Note: This position will be issued a TEA; those working as a current 40-hr/week classified employee of VBCPS should not apply as this would exceed allowed hours per week.

This is a part-time hourly position. The hourly rate of pay = $16.3956/hour
  • The Adult Learning Center is currently seeking qualified applicants for the part-time position of evening and/or Saturday Security Assistant.
  • The ALC is open four evenings each week, Monday - Thursday, and every other Saturday throughout the school and calendar year.
  • Evening Security Assistants work one to two nights a week and Saturday as requested.
