Phlebotomist – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, Phlebotomists become part of a purpose-driven environment where compassion, clinical excellence, and patient-centered care create meaningful opportunities to support medical diagnostic services. This Phlebotomist role offers opportunities for professional growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a culture committed to quality, evidence-based laboratory practices, and continuous improvement. In this versatile role, you will float across various pre-analytical settings, including inpatient units, outpatient stations, and send-out processing, while maintaining exceptional accuracy and patient care. This position also includes outreach assignments to support various local nursing home locations. Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, you will play an essential role in patient identification, precise blood and specimen collection, database management, and cross-functional teamwork, partnering with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes. Joining RWJBarnabas Health means joining a community where every Phlebotomist is encouraged to grow, contribute, and make a lasting impact on our patient community.

A typical day for a Phlebotomist may include:

  • Receiving and determining the acceptability of all specimens received by the Department of Pathology.
  • Preparing specimens according to designated protocols for each laboratory procedure, utilizing correct collection tubes or capillaries containing specific preservatives or anticoagulants.
  • Engaging in technical computer database activity across both the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Hospital Information System (HIS).
  • Obtaining blood and non-blood specimens from patients across inpatient, outpatient, and outreach settings by venipuncture from the arm and/or micro-collections from fingers or an infant’s heel.
  • Understanding and actively executing proper patient identification methods utilizing two distinct identifiers prior to any collection protocol.
  • Actively contributing to overall section productivity, operational efficiency, and workplace cost-effectiveness.
  • Recognizing complex or unusual clinical situations that require immediate referral to the Technical Supervisor, Manager, Laboratory Director, or Chief of Section.
  • Performing additional laboratory, administrative, or clinical tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

This role might be for you if:

  • Compassion and empathy guide your interactions with patients, families, and your clinical laboratory colleagues.
  • You possess a deep knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and the safe use of relevant medical equipment.
  • You maintain a solid understanding of testing protocols and the proper use of clinical testing equipment.
  • Superb manual dexterity and sharp hand-eye coordination allow you to execute precise venipunctures cleanly.
  • You display excellent verbal and written communication skills when collaborating with medical teams and diverse patient populations.
  • Strong organizational skills allow you to seamlessly manage collection schedules across diverse environments, including hospital clinics and off-site nursing homes.
  • Adaptability allows you to navigate a mobile outreach workflow, comfortably traveling to off-site locations to service assigned patients.
  • Continuous learning, strict safety compliance, and professional development within an acute care laboratory framework are important to you.

To be considered for this Phlebotomist opportunity, you will have:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • A valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle are required for outreach phlebotomists assigned to various nursing home locations. (Travel mileage will be reimbursed).
  • One (1) year of practical phlebotomy experience with demonstrated success using effective venipuncture techniques preferred.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy and/or Medical Assistant program, or equivalent certification with an accredited agency preferred.
  • Part-Time Evening position requiring 25 hours per week, with a shift schedule of 2:00 PM – 7:30 PM.
  • This position requires rotating weekends and holidays. If you are scheduled to work a weekend shift, an alternative weekday off will be provided during that schedule block.
